Part 1

The wrought iron gates of Holloway Sound creaked shut behind Nia Dupree, a sound like a phantom sigh in the humid New Orleans night. Sweat beaded on her temples, clinging to the wisps of hair that had escaped her braid.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm against the quiet symphony of crickets and distant jazz.

She hadn’t been back to the estate in over two years. Not since her mother, Camille, passed. Not since her life had spiraled into the chaos of addiction and then the stark, unforgiving silence of bankruptcy.

Now, she was back for what was rightfully theirs.

The studio, a grand, gothic-revival mansion, loomed under the partial moonlight, its stained-glass windows dark and uninviting. Marcus Holloway, her stepfather, still owned it. And everything in it. Including Camille’s masters.

Nia moved like a shadow through the overgrown azaleas, the thick air heavy with the scent of jasmine and decay. She knew these grounds better than Marcus ever would. She’d played hide-and-seek here as a child, finding secret nooks and forgotten passages.

One such passage led to the rear entrance of the historic recording studio itself, a place her mother called her sanctuary.

A small, unlatched service door, usually reserved for late-night equipment deliveries, was her target. Marcus, in his arrogance, often overlooked the small details.

She reached it, her fingers trembling slightly as they wrapped around the cold, brass handle. It turned with a soft click, barely audible above her own ragged breathing.

The door swung inward, revealing a sliver of darkness.

A familiar wave of scents washed over her: old wood, aged leather, and the faint, sweet metallic tang of electronics. It was the smell of creation, of her mother’s genius, now warped by Marcus’s greed.

Nia slipped inside, pulling the door shut behind her. The silence was absolute, broken only by the frantic beat of her own pulse in her ears.

She navigated the labyrinthine hallways by memory, her hands gliding along the textured wallpaper. Every shadow felt like a watchful eye. Every creak of the old house was a potential discovery.

Her destination: the archival vault in the basement, where her mother’s original master tapes lay untouched. Unused. Until now.

She reached the heavy, soundproof door of the vault, a massive slab of mahogany and steel. A coded keypad gleamed faintly in the gloom.

Nia closed her eyes, picturing her mother’s slender fingers punching in the numbers. It was Camille’s birthday. Always Camille’s birthday.

She entered the sequence. The keypad glowed green, then chirped softly. A faint whirring sound came from deep within the door’s mechanism.

With a heavy groan, the vault door swung open, revealing rows upon rows of shelved master reels, dusty and silent. The air inside was cool, dry, preserved.

Nia stepped into the sacred space, a tremor running through her. This was where Camille’s true legacy resided, untouched by Marcus’s machinations.

She scanned the labels, searching for the distinctive handwriting. “Camille Dupree – Blue Lotus Demos – 1998.” There it was, tucked away on the third shelf, exactly where her mother had always kept her most precious work.

Her fingers brushed against the worn tape box, a sudden warmth spreading through her hand. It felt electric, a pulse from the past.

Just as her grasp tightened around the box, a sound cut through the silence.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Heavy boots. Distinct. Deliberate. They echoed from somewhere upstairs, growing louder, closer, the rhythm sending a fresh jolt of fear through her.

Nia froze, the master tapes clutched to her chest. She backed deeper into the vault, her eyes darting around the shadows.

The thumping grew deafening, right outside the vault door. Then, a slow, deliberate creak.

The heavy mahogany door to the archive vault began to swing inward, revealing a tall, imposing silhouette framed against the faint light of the hallway.

Part 2

Marcus Holloway stood there, filling the doorway, a predatory smile playing on his lips. In his hand, he held a single sheet of paper, neatly folded.

“Nia. Always so dramatic,” he purred, his voice too calm for the late hour.

He unfolded the document. “This is your signed agreement. Abandon your claims to ‘Hollow Soul’ now, and we can forget this ever happened.”

My grip tightened on Camille’s tapes.

“Refuse,” he continued, “and your brother Trevon will find his credit ruined. The bank will foreclose on your mother’s house by next week.”
