Julian’s sobs were the only sound in the ruined basement archive, punctuated by the distant rumble of the retreating storm. He lay curled on the floor, a picture of absolute desolation. The signed papers lay beside him, crumpled by his despair.

Then, the heavy basement door at the top of the stairs creaked open.

A gasp filled the air, sharp and sudden.

Clara stood silhouetted in the doorway, her eyes wide, scanning the chaos. She had somehow tracked us down. Her face was pale, streaked with rain, and her expensive dress was damp around the shoulders. She had likely rushed here directly from whatever society event Julian was supposed to attend with her.

Her gaze landed on Julian, huddled on the floor. Her eyes widened in horror.

“Julian?” she whispered, her voice trembling. She took a tentative step down the stairs. “What happened? What did you do to him, Mother?”

She rushed to Julian’s side, ignoring the smoke and the ruined electronics. She knelt beside him, wrapping her arms around his shaking frame. She looked up at me, her eyes blazing, not with understanding, but with fierce, misguided loyalty.

“What is this, Mother?” she demanded, her voice rising. “What have you done?”

“He signed over his company, Clara,” I stated, my voice even. “It was the consequence of his actions.”

“Consequence?” Her laugh was brittle, humorless. “You drove him to this! You ruined him! You’ve always hated him, haven’t you? Ever since he married me, ever since he wasn’t ‘old money’ enough for your precious family!”

She pulled Julian closer, as if to shield him from me. He clung to her, his sobs turning into gasping breaths.

“Clara, he stole your grandmother’s necklace,” I explained, gesturing to the signed papers. “He used Arthur Pendelton to appraise it as worthless, sold it for nearly a million dollars, and used the money to buy a Birkin bag and a penthouse for his mistress, Chloe Dupont.”

Her face hardened. She recoiled from my words as if I had struck her.

“Lies!” she shrieked, her voice echoing in the concrete space. “More of your cruel, calculating lies! You’re trying to destroy my marriage, destroy my life, just because you couldn’t control him! You’re jealous of his success, of our happiness!”

She shook her head, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the rain on her cheeks. She refused to see, refused to hear. The truth, when it attacked her carefully constructed world, was simply too much for her to bear. She clung to the lie, to the image of Julian she had built in her mind.

“He’s broken, Mother,” she sobbed, burying her face in Julian’s shoulder. “And you did this. You’re a monster.”
