Julian stood amidst the scattered files, his face a mask of desperation. He still gripped the wrench, but it now seemed less like a weapon and more like a crutch.

“You’re making a mistake, Eleanor,” he stammered, his voice hoarse. “You can’t prove any of this. It’s my word against yours, and I have the digital footprint. Thousands of transactions, all verified. You’re just clinging to some arcane clause.”

“And you’re clinging to a fantasy,” I countered, my voice steady. “A house of cards built on deceit.”

Just then, a shadow detached itself from the deeper gloom between two towering stacks of inactive servers. Marcus Banning stepped forward, his face pale in the flickering fluorescent light, his small leather briefcase clutched tight.

Julian’s eyes widened. “Marcus? What are you doing here?” He looked genuinely shocked, as if he’d forgotten Marcus even existed.

Marcus didn’t acknowledge Julian directly. He turned to me, his gaze somber.

“Eleanor,” he said, his voice quiet but clear. “He’s right about one thing. Everything *is* digital. But not in the way he thinks.”

Julian frowned. “What are you talking about?”

Marcus finally looked at Julian, a flicker of old resentment in his eyes. “Those backup servers, Julian. The ones you boast about.” He pointed a finger towards the humming racks. “They do contain records.”

He paused, letting the words hang in the heavy air. Julian shifted, a nervous energy radiating from him.

“They contain every single forged appraisal report from Arthur Pendelton,” Marcus continued, his voice gaining strength. “Every doctored invoice he created to hide the original necklet’s sale. Every fictitious valuation of Chloe Dupont’s ‘gifts.'”

Julian recoiled as if struck. “You’re lying! You wouldn’t betray me!”

“You betrayed me first, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice flat. “Pushed me out, stripped my shares, discredited my work. Said I was ‘too old-fashioned’ for your ‘innovative’ future.” He pulled a thick, bound ledger from his briefcase. Its black cover gleamed. “I kept records. Hard copies and digital. Just in case.”

He held up the ledger. “These are the copies of Pendelton’s original, honest appraisals. And these,” he flipped to a marked page, “are the ones you coerced him into signing. The digital files on those servers?” He nodded towards the racks. “They’re mirror images of these forged documents.”

Julian’s face was a mask of utter horror. The wrench clattered to the floor, forgotten. He stared at Marcus, then at me, then at the servers. His digital kingdom, which he thought was impenetrable, was now revealed as his own undoing, meticulously documented by his cast-aside partner.

The truth had just stepped out of the shadows.
