Chapter 16: The Morning After

The darkness inside the cottage was absolute. I hadn’t slept, pacing the floor, listening to every creak of the old house, every rustle outside. The moonless night pressed against the windows.

Suddenly, a faint scraping sound came from beneath the floorboards in the small pantry. My hand shot out, grabbing a heavy porcelain pitcher from the table.

The sound continued, closer now. A small, square panel in the floor, usually covered by a rug, slowly slid open.

A small, grimy face peeked out. Clara.

“Daddy!” she whispered, her eyes wide with urgency.

Relief washed over me so intensely my knees almost buckled. She was safe.

“Clara, what are you doing?” I whispered back, kneeling. “How did you get in here?”

She squeezed through the narrow opening, emerging dusted with cobwebs and soot. She wore her usual school uniform, but her face was smudged.

“The old utility steam tunnels,” she explained, her voice remarkably steady. “The ones that connect all the buildings. I used to explore them all the time.”

My daughter, my brave, clever daughter. I pulled her into a tight hug.

“I saw Mr. Fitzwilliam,” she recounted, pulling back slightly. “He said you were very sick. But I knew he was lying. He was worried about the bakery delivery boy seeing you.”

“He told me you were being sent away,” I said, a tremor in my voice.

“I hid,” she clarified. “Then I went to the chapel.”

My heart jumped. “Marcus? Is he alright?”

“He’s very weak, Daddy,” she reported, her brow furrowed. “I brought him some canned peaches and some bandages. The ones from my first aid kit.”

She reached into her school satchel, rummaging through books and pencils. “And I got this.”

She pulled out a small, intricately carved wooden cane cap. It was smooth, dark wood, with a tiny, almost invisible seam.

“It looks just like Teresa’s cane cap,” I observed, taking it from her. It was heavy, solid.

“It’s the second key,” Clara explained, her eyes shining. “The one to Headmaster Danforth’s wall safe. Teresa told me where it was hidden. Inside the Headmaster’s study, behind the portrait of Great-Uncle Edgar.”

My breath caught in my throat. A second key. Arthur’s desk safe. The one I hadn’t been able to open. Teresa had known. She and Marcus had planned for this.

Clara looked up at me, her small hand reaching for mine. “We’re going to catch them, Daddy. Aren’t we?”

I squeezed her hand. “Yes, Clara. We are.”
