Chapter 10: Executive Ambush

#content-1

👉 Previous decision: You chose Option B – Confront Julian face-to-face inside his VIP executive suite to force a recorded confession.

The VIP executive suite at the Global Entertainment Awards was a haven of polished wood and hushed conversations. Julian Kincaid stood by a large window, a glass of champagne in his hand, watching the red carpet spectacle below. Clara Halloway had secured my entry, a calculated risk, a final attempt to confront the man who had destroyed so many lives, including my own.

I stepped inside, closing the door behind me. The soft click drew Julian’s attention. He turned, his smile dissolving as he saw me.

“Ethan,” he said, his voice flat. He didn’t seem surprised. “I assumed you’d make a theatrical appearance. You always did enjoy the spotlight, even when it wasn’t yours.”

“I have Devon Hart’s medical records,” I stated, pulling the thick folder from my jacket. My hands trembled slightly. “The real ones. I know what you did, Julian. What Apex did.”

He took a slow sip of his champagne. “Do you really think that means anything, Ethan? Paper. Against the power of Apex? The memory wipe will sort this all out.”

“Not this time,” I retorted, pulling out my own burner phone. “I’m recording this. Confess, Julian. Tell me everything.”

A bitter laugh escaped him. “Confess? To you? My foolish, naive friend? You think a phone recording will stand against an empire?” He shook his head, a look of genuine pity on his face. “You still don’t understand.”

He reached for a hidden panel on the wall, similar to the one in his office at Apex. My blood ran cold.

“This suite,” Julian said, his eyes hard, “is equipped with Apex’s latest electromagnetic suppression field. It’s designed to protect against all forms of data leaks. Including, I’m afraid, personal brain activity.”

He pressed a button. A faint, almost imperceptible hum filled the room, growing steadily louder, more insistent. My phone, clutched in my hand, went dead. The screen flickered, then died completely.

“It scrambles everything, Ethan,” Julian explained, a cruel smile forming. “All electronics, all neural pathways. A deep purge. More permanent than anything you experienced on the Severance Floor.”

My head began to throb. A sharp, piercing pain lanced behind my eyes. I dropped the folder, the papers scattering across the plush carpet. The details of Devon Hart’s trauma, now meaningless, floating around us.

“No,” I gasped, stumbling backward. My vision blurred. I tried to speak, to scream, but the words wouldn’t form. The hum intensified, a high-pitched shriek that filled my skull.

Julian watched me, his expression impassive. “It’s a clean reset, Ethan. For your own good. You’ll be back on the Severance Floor tomorrow, a perfectly compliant employee.”

The pain became unbearable, a searing white-hot agony that consumed everything. My mind, stripped clean for the final time. There would be no escape, no memory of what I had attempted, no trace of the friend I had betrayed, or the truth I had tried to uncover. Only the blankness remained.
