The saloon was quiet, save for Eli’s distant, muffled screams from the cage outside. Alvarez’s men were still present, ensuring the transition of power was clean, but they were giving me space. They understood the necessity of these final, bloody acts.

I walked to the center of the saloon, my gaze sweeping over the dusty wooden floor. Beneath it, a network of explosives, rigged weeks ago, lay dormant. It was my final gambit, my ultimate sacrifice.

The plan was simple, brutal, and effective. A massive blast. No witnesses. Just a level stretch of desert where a notorious syndicate hub once stood.

I pulled a small, remote detonator from my boot. Its single button stared up at me, representing the end of one life and the beginning of another – for Maeve.

My mind replayed Maeve’s face, her tear-filled eyes, the touch of her hand. It was a phantom sensation, already fading, as if I were already a ghost. I closed my eyes, picturing the clean ranch, the open sky, the life she would build. A life free of the dust, the blood, the endless shadow of the underworld.

Eli’s last words echoed in my head: “This world will never let you go!”

But it would let Maeve go. I would ensure it.

I opened my eyes. My gaze fell on the heavy, wooden support beams of the saloon, marked with my hidden explosives. This entire place, this monument to Eli’s twisted empire, was about to become nothing but rubble and memory.

I took a deep breath, the smell of stale whiskey and fear filling my lungs one last time.

Then, with a grim resolve, I pressed the button.

A low rumble started, growing quickly into a thunderous roar. The wooden floor beneath me vibrated violently. Dust rained down from the ceiling. Syndicate men shouted, their faces contorting in confusion and terror. They had expected a quiet execution, not an apocalypse.

I turned and ran, not towards an exit, but towards the far end of the saloon, towards a pre-rigged escape tunnel I’d dug months ago, during my “imprisonment.” The tunnel would take me far out into the desert, away from the blast zone.

The sound became deafening. The saloon structure groaned, timbers splintering, windows shattering inward. The very ground bucked. I heard the crack of collapsing walls, the shriek of twisting metal. The Rattlesnake Saloon, the heart of Eli Rudd’s empire, was tearing itself apart.

Behind me, the world exploded. A massive, fiery detonation ripped through the building, a concussive wave that threw me forward into the darkness of the tunnel. The roar was immense, all-consuming, a sound that would forever haunt my dreams.

I didn’t look back. I couldn’t.

Miles away, Boyd Kincaid watched the distant pillar of smoke rise into the twilight sky. He tightened his grip on Maeve’s arm as they boarded a northbound train. Her face was streaked with tears, but her eyes, though full of grief, held a faint glimmer of hope. The train whistle shrieked, a mournful sound carrying her away, to a new life, a clean future.

And I, Silas Rudd, was dead.
