Principal Carver cleared his throat, his voice regaining some of its usual practiced authority. “Welcome, parents, students, and community members. We have a full agenda tonight, so I’d like to move directly to the voting on the Oakridge High School athletic budget and the proposed land development contract.”

His eyes flickered over the crowd, intentionally avoiding eye contact with the track team. The message was clear: no public comments, no discussion about Elena or the transfer files. He was trying to ram it through.

I felt a surge of adrenaline. This was it.

I stepped forward, moving towards the public microphone at the front of the auditorium. Nora walked right behind me, her hand resting lightly on my back.

“Mr. Principal,” I said, my voice cutting through the murmurs. “I believe there are some urgent matters regarding student safety and administrative transparency that need to be addressed before any votes are cast.”

Before I could finish, one of Marcus Dax’s corporate lawyers, a woman with a severe ponytail and an even severer expression, immediately rose to object.

“Point of order, Mr. Chairman,” she announced, her voice sharp and legalistic. “District procedural rules strictly prohibit student statements regarding private administrative files or ongoing internal investigations. This is a budget hearing, not a forum for unsubstantiated rumors.”

Carver, clearly relieved, nodded vigorously. “Objection sustained. We will not be sidetracked by personal grievances, Ms. Lin.” He raised his gavel, preparing to dismiss me.

But then, a new voice, quiet yet firm, cut through the tense silence.

“Mr. Principal, if I may.”

Everyone turned. Martha Ellison, the school board notary and administrative clerk, stood up from her desk at the side of the stage. She held a thick, sealed Manila envelope, bound tightly with red notary string, a large wax seal prominent on its front.

A ripple went through the crowd. Martha Ellison was an institution, quiet and unassuming, never one to speak out.

Carver’s eyes widened, a flicker of panic in their depths. He banged his gavel, his composure starting to crack. “Ms. Ellison, please, this is highly irregular. We are in the middle of a vote.”

Martha ignored him. She walked deliberately, her steps slow and steady, directly to the center microphone. She held the envelope aloft for everyone to see.

“As an officer of the state court,” she announced, her voice resonating through the auditorium, clear and unwavering, “I am executing an emergency override under Statute 417, subsection B.”

Carver’s face paled. “Override? Ms. Ellison, I must insist!”

“I am submitting a sworn statement into the permanent public record,” Martha continued, her gaze sweeping over the audience, stopping briefly at Julian’s solitary figure. “A statement concerning an ongoing school district cover-up and criminal negligence.”

The crowd erupted. Reporters frantically started scribbling notes. Flashbulbs began to pop. Carver’s gavel strikes became frantic, impotent thuds against the rising tide of noise. Martha Ellison, the quiet notary, had just detonated a bomb.
