My Ex-Boyfriend Threatened My Sister After a Hit-and-Run — Then I Snapped Her Mobility Cane at a Pep Rally and Forced the Principal to Open the Sealed File
The administrative building was a ghost town after hours, the long hallways stretching into pools of shadow, interrupted only by the emergency lights. I moved through the quiet building, my heart thumping against my ribs. Nora’s confession had only deepened my resolve. Carver wasn’t just covering up an accident; he was actively terrorizing students and leveraging their families.
I found the principal’s office, the brass key feeling heavy in my hand. The vault door, a formidable slab of reinforced steel, was tucked away behind a fake bookcase panel. I fumbled with the key, my fingers trembling slightly.
Just as I was about to insert it into the lock, the overhead lights flickered on with a soft hum.
I froze, my hand still poised.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the sudden brightness, was Martha Ellison, the veteran school board notary and administrative clerk. Her hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and her expression was unreadable.
My stomach dropped. I was caught. I expected her to yell, to call security, to threaten me with suspension.
Instead, Martha walked past me, a faint scent of lavender following her. She calmly locked the outer door to the principal’s office, the click echoing loudly in the sudden silence.
Then, she turned to me. “I knew someone would eventually come looking for it,” she said, her voice surprisingly gentle for someone who’d just caught me breaking into a restricted area.
She walked to a small, cluttered desk in the corner, a desk I’d always assumed was just for sorting mail. From beneath a stack of old files, she pulled out a worn, leather-bound ledger, stamped with official wax seals.
“Elena Gomez’s emergency transfer request,” Martha stated, her fingers tracing the faded lettering. “The original copy.”
My eyes widened. “But Hobart said it was sealed. Transferred.”
“It was,” Martha confirmed, her gaze hardening. “But I kept this. In my personal desk. For months.”
She opened the ledger, revealing a meticulously filed document. My jaw nearly hit the floor. This was the holy grail, the proof I’d been searching for.
“I knew Hobart’s insurance report was a complete forgery,” Martha admitted, her voice a low thrum of disgust. “He listed it as off-campus. The initial police log said otherwise.”
She sighed, a heavy, tired sound. “My conscience couldn’t take it anymore, Maya. I’m retiring next year. I won’t let my final act be complicity in Carver’s lies.”
Her gaze met mine, steady and serious. “But you need to understand something.”
She paused, taking a breath. “Opening this file, truly opening it, will expose secrets you aren’t prepared to handle. Secrets about Carver, about Marcus Dax… and about Julian.”
My mind raced. What could be worse than what I already suspected? That Julian ran down Elena, then covered it up with his father’s money and Carver’s complicity? What other truth could there be that would be so shattering?
Martha held out the ledger, its pages heavy with untold stories. The moment of truth had arrived.
