Chapter 18: A Quiet Apology

Despite Robert’s desperate claims of blackmail, a small, insidious doubt began to gnaw at me. Was it possible Sarah was truly so ruthless? I knew she was ambitious and materialistic, but blackmail? I decided to monitor her social media, to see if her public persona supported Robert’s dramatic tale of coercion.

Sarah’s social media feeds were a curated spectacle of opulence. Her Instagram was a constant stream of lavish brunches, exotic vacations, and designer shopping sprees. What stood out, however, was her conspicuous display of new, expensive jewelry. A sapphire necklace one week, diamond earrings the next.

She posted a picture of herself at a high-end restaurant, her hand casually resting on the table, her new diamond bracelet glinting under the soft lighting. The same bracelet Daniel had eyed with unease at dinner. The caption read: “Celebrating success! Hard work pays off.” The irony was sickening.

Her posts seemed to confirm Robert’s narrative, at least superficially. Here was a woman enjoying an extravagant lifestyle, seemingly at Robert’s expense, with a blatant disregard for discretion. It was exactly the kind of ostentatious behavior one might associate with a blackmailer making demands.

I remembered Robert’s trembling voice, his panicked eyes, as he described Sarah’s alleged threats. For a moment, a pang of doubt struck me. Could he, despite all his other deceits, be telling a partial truth about this? Had he been truly cornered by a cunning woman, forced to steal and betray against his will?

The thought was fleeting, quickly overshadowed by the weight of all the other evidence I possessed. But it was a nagging whisper, a momentary crack in my certainty. Robert was a liar, yes, but he was also a master manipulator, capable of weaving elements of truth into his deceptions to make them more believable.

I scrolled through more of Sarah’s posts. There was a close-up of a delicate, custom-designed pendant, sparkling with a deep blue sapphire. It was elegant, clearly expensive. “A little treat to myself,” the caption said, followed by a winking emoji. The casualness of it suggested a sense of entitlement, rather than a hidden, guilty pleasure.

This display of wealth, this open flaunting of luxury, could easily be interpreted as a blackmailer’s triumph. It fed directly into the image Robert was trying to create: Sarah, the cunning, insatiable woman, extorting lavish gifts from her coerced lover. It made his story feel, for a fleeting moment, plausible.

The specific cruelty of it was the way it made me question my own judgment. Had I been too quick to condemn? Was Robert genuinely a victim in this one aspect, manipulated by an even more ruthless individual? The doubt was a poison, seeping into my resolve.

I thought about Maya and Lily. How would they react if they knew their father was being blackmailed? Would they see him as a victim, or as a weak man? And how would they see Sarah, their aunt, if this story were true? The emotional entanglement was immense.

But then, my analytical mind, the crisis consultant within me, kicked in. Robert’s story, while dramatically delivered, had too many holes. It didn’t account for Phoenix Holdings, for the siphoned trust funds. And if Sarah was truly blackmailing him, why wouldn’t he simply expose her? He was a powerful man.

The timing of the alleged blackmail also felt off. Robert had been having an affair with Sarah for months, if not longer, before the penthouse purchase. Why would she suddenly choose to blackmail him then? It felt too convenient, too perfectly timed to deflect blame from his own actions.

I closed my laptop, the image of Sarah’s sapphire pendant still vivid in my mind. The doubt lingered, a tiny splinter. But my gut, honed by years of sniffing out corporate deceit, told me there was more to this story. Robert was spinning a tale, and I needed to find the thread that would unravel it completely.

The answer, I knew, lay not in Sarah’s public display, but in the hidden financial transactions. I needed concrete, irrefutable evidence that would disprove Robert’s desperate lie about blackmail. I needed to go back to the records, to the source. The truth was there, I just hadn’t found the right key yet.

A corporate consultant’s husband embezzled her inheritance for his mistress, but he overlooked the contract clause that made their home legally hers.
