Chapter 12: On the following Sunday

The storm raged with an almost biblical fury. News channels flashed warnings of a rare microburst event, unprecedented for the season, tearing through the tri-state area. Trees groaned and snapped outside the large windows of Lily’s sanctuary cottage. I stood by her bedside, watching her shallow, rhythmic breathing, a strange calm settling over me despite the chaos outside. She was safe, I reminded myself. That was all that mattered.

My phone rang again. It was Dr. Evans, the director of Lily’s former facility. His voice was frantic.

“Ms. Kincaid, the storm… it’s causing widespread power outages. A major electrical line just collapsed near the Danforth estate. It brought down a section of the main building’s roof where the old vault is located.”

My blood ran cold. Eleanor. Julian. They were there, trying to access those bonds. The image of the crumbling estate, the dark vault exposed to the tempest, flashed through my mind. Poetic justice, perhaps.

“And Lily?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “Is everything stable here?”

“For now, yes,” he said, “but we’re on backup generators. We’re getting reports of severe flooding and road closures everywhere. We had a transport ambulance scheduled to take some critical supplies to the cottage for Lily this evening, but it’s struggling. The storm… it’s just too much.”

A chilling premonition settled over me. “What do you mean, struggling?”

“High-velocity winds, Ms. Kincaid. There’s been a massive oak tree uprooted directly across their intended route, near the old country bridge. They’re stuck. Power lines are down everywhere.”

My breath hitched. Lily’s transport ambulance route. The same storm that was bringing down Eleanor’s world was now threatening Lily’s lifeline. The supplies were vital, but the thought of that ambulance, isolated and vulnerable in the heart of the tempest, sent a tremor of fear through me.

I looked at Lily, so fragile, so dependent. My victory over Eleanor felt hollow, distant. All that mattered was Lily’s safety.

“Dispatch my personal security team immediately,” I ordered, my voice sharp and urgent. “Give them the ambulance’s exact location. Tell them to clear the debris, secure the area, and escort that vehicle to the cottage. No delays. Nothing else matters.”

The line crackled, then went dead. The microburst had taken out my cell signal. The cottage was now truly isolated. All I could do was wait, and pray, as the storm raged on, its unseen hand reaching into the lives of everyone I knew.
