Chapter 12: On the following Sunday

Eleanor sat there, utterly broken. The grand matriarch, reduced to a trembling shell. Her face, usually so composed, crumpled. I watched her, feeling no satisfaction, only a weary sense of finality.

“Sign these,” I instructed, pushing a set of documents across the table. “They’re unconditional surrender agreements. They transfer all remaining executive control of the Danforth Family Trust to me, grant me full corporate ownership of Apex Global Capital, and cede any claims you or Julian may have. They also stipulate full restitution of the $80 million you embezzled, which will be recovered from your frozen assets.”

She looked up, her eyes glazed. “And if I don’t?”

“Then I hand over all of Vane’s files, and the original charter, to the Department of Justice,” I replied, my voice devoid of emotion. “You and Julian will be arrested by morning. Your reputation, what little remains, will be shredded beyond repair. You’ll die in a federal prison.”

Her jaw worked, her gaze sweeping around the empty boardroom, as if searching for an escape that wasn’t there. She slowly reached for the pen, her hand shaking so violently that the tip skittered across the page. With a choked sound, she scrawled her signature on each document.

“Now leave,” I said, once the last page was signed. “And don’t ever return to Apex Global Capital, or any of its properties.”

She stood, her movements stiff, and walked out without another word. The door swished shut behind her, leaving the penthouse in silence once more. It was done.

But Eleanor Danforth was not one to face consequences head-on. As night fell, a severe gale began to lash the city. Rain hammered against the windows, and the wind howled like a banshee. My phone buzzed. It was Marcus Thorne, my private investigator.

“Maya, Eleanor just left the penthouse. Julian was waiting in a car downstairs. They’re heading straight for the Danforth estate.”

“The estate? What for?” I asked, a sudden unease coiling in my stomach.

“Our intel suggests she keeps a significant amount of bearer bonds—untraceable assets—in a hidden vault there,” Marcus explained, the wind whipping in the background of his call. “She must be trying to retrieve them before the asset freeze takes full effect. A last-ditch effort to escape with something.”

My heart pounded. Bearer bonds. The last vestiges of her ill-gotten gains, enough to fund a comfortable exile, or at least a desperate fight. I pictured her, ruined and enraged, fleeing into the raging autumn night, clutching at any scrap of power or wealth she could salvage. It was a desperate, dangerous move, and in this storm, it could turn deadly.
