My Wealthy Ex-Husband Cast Me Out as Barren Five Years Ago — Then He Spotted My Daughter's Black-and-Gold Eyes at a Private Dinner
The silence in the Merchants’ Exchange was absolute, broken only by the scrape of my sensible boots on the polished floor. Julian stared, his mouth agape, as Eleanor and I approached. Eleanor, clutching a small fabric doll, looked around with wide, curious eyes, completely unaware of the fury she ignited.
“There she is!” Julian roared, finally finding his voice, raw with rage. He lunged from behind the podium, his hand outstretched, aiming for me. “The fraud! The liar who ruined my family name!”
A gasp rippled through the crowd. Several men tried to intervene, but Julian, propelled by a desperate, animal fury, pushed past them. His eyes were wild, fixed on Eleanor.
“This child,” he shrieked, his voice cracking, “is a fabrication! A calculated deception!”
His hand closed around my arm, his grip bruising. I flinched, Eleanor letting out a small whimper as she was jostled.
“Give me the child, Clara!” he demanded, spittle flying from his lips. “She is a Montgomery, and she will not be raised by a deceitful harlot!”
“She is a Montgomery,” I shot back, my voice clear despite the pain, “but not *your* Montgomery. She is Captain Edward Montgomery’s daughter, lawfully wedded to me before his death at Antietam!”
I raised the marriage certificate, its official seals catching the light. Gideon, standing a few feet away, began to speak loudly to the reporters, explaining the true contents of Arthur’s ledger, pointing to the headlines he carried.
Julian saw the certificate, his eyes darting from the paper to Eleanor’s face, a terrible dawning horror in his expression. “No! It’s a lie! A desperate invention!”
He raised his free hand, as if to strike. Just then, a cacophony erupted from the main doors.
“Emergency foreclosure notices! Stand aside!”
A squad of bank couriers, their faces grim and determined, burst into the room, followed by two stern-faced federal marshals. They moved with swift, brutal efficiency, their eyes scanning the room for Julian.
“Mr. Julian Montgomery,” one of the marshals announced, his voice cutting through the stunned silence. “Your assets are hereby seized by order of the United States Treasury, pending an immediate accounting of your outstanding debts and a full investigation into federal railway contract fraud.”
The effect was instantaneous and absolute. The carefully orchestrated press reception dissolved into utter chaos. Reporters, sensing a far bigger story, surged forward, shouting questions. The politicians and financial men, who moments ago had been Julian’s allies, scattered like frightened birds, desperate to distance themselves.
“My debts? This is outrageous!” Julian screamed, momentarily forgetting me. “My company is solvent!”
“The European bondholders demand immediate payment of $140,000 in bad debts, Mr. Montgomery,” a bank courier stated, shoving a thick stack of papers into Julian’s chest. “Your collateral has collapsed.”
Before Julian could utter another word, two burly couriers physically gripped his arms. He struggled, shouting obscenities, but they were unyielding. The room became a maelstrom of yelling, flashing cameras, and the rustle of official documents.
The crowd surged forward, trampling the podium, scattering Julian’s notes. He was dragged away, still screaming, amidst the shouts of creditors and the flash of reporters’ cameras. His meticulously planned climax had been ripped apart, his downfall swift and brutally public.
Eleanor, wide-eyed, clung to my leg. I pulled her close, shielding her from the spectacle. The man who had sought to destroy us was now himself being destroyed, not by my hand, but by the weight of his own deceptions.
