Chapter 12: A Quiet Morning in March

Julian worked through the night, a frantic whirlwind of calls and demands. By Friday morning, a hastily organized press reception was announced for the Merchants’ Exchange, an imposing hall usually reserved for trade deals and financial announcements. He intended to preempt the full market crash, to paint Clara as a bitter, vengeful woman, and the ledger as a fabrication.

The news reached Gideon and me via a breathless messenger boy. Julian was making a public stand. It was now or never.

“You don’t have to go, Mrs. Danforth,” Gideon said, looking at my pale face and the shallow, persistent cough that punctuated my sentences. Eleanor was staying with his sister, safe from the storm.

My lungs burned with every breath. The damp cold of the past weeks had settled deep, and a low fever simmered beneath my skin. But withdrawal was not an option. Julian was making his play, and I had to be there to meet it.

“I must,” I replied, pulling on my simplest, darkest wool coat. It was threadbare in places, a stark contrast to the finery that Julian’s world represented. “This is not just about me, Mr. Croft. This is for Eleanor.”

I carried a small leather satchel. Inside, carefully wrapped, was not only Arthur’s ledger, but also Edward’s official military marriage certificate from that small Maryland parish, stamped and verified. Next to it was a copy of the parish record itself. Undeniable proof.

“I will be with you,” Gideon promised, adjusting his spectacles. He carried a fresh stack of newspapers, the damning headlines visible to anyone who cared to look.

The Merchants’ Exchange was already crowded, a buzzing hive of reporters, politicians, and nervous financial figures. Gaslight chandeliers cast a harsh glow on the ornate ceiling. Julian stood at a podium, his face drawn but his posture rigid with forced confidence. Genevieve was conspicuously absent.

He began to speak, his voice booming across the hall, already launching into a scathing denunciation of “slanderous accusations” and “malicious falsehoods.”

“These vile claims,” he thundered, pounding the podium, “are nothing more than the desperate revenge of a woman cast out for her own inadequacies! A woman who has now stooped to fabricating documents with the help of a sensationalist journalist!”

My heart pounded, but I kept my pace steady as I walked through the heavy doors. My simple dark wool coat was a beacon of plainness against the dark suits and silks. Eleanor’s hand, small and trusting, was firmly clasped in mine. Her presence, her innocence, was my shield.

Julian’s eyes found me across the room. His speech faltered. His face, already pale, drained of all color. His gaze dropped to Eleanor, then back to my resolute expression.

He had expected me to be hiding, broken. He had not expected me to walk in, head held high, with the living proof of his deceit by my side. The room fell into a sudden, stunned silence as I continued my slow, deliberate walk towards the podium. The reckoning had begun.
