Four hours before the official public press conference, the air in my dressing room was thick with tension. Julian entered, flanked by two stern-faced studio lawyers I recognized from Apex’s corporate team.
Julian’s smile was chillingly confident. He held a thick contract folder in his hand. “Leo, we need to finalize some things,” he said, his voice smooth, as if he were doing me a favor.
One of the lawyers stepped forward, placing a modified contract on the small table. “Mr. DeLuca, Apex Studios has been very patient. Given the recent… unfortunate incidents, we’ve prepared a revised offer.”
I picked up the document. The terms were brutal. I was to accept second billing in the ‘Apex’ franchise. Relinquish all trust oversight to V-Kross Enterprises. And take a crippling 60% salary cut from the original $12.5 million deal.
“Failure to comply,” the lawyer continued, his voice devoid of emotion, “will result in Apex Studios immediately canceling your contract entirely and filing a civil damages suit for breach of conduct and reputational harm.”
Julian leaned against the doorframe, watching me, a faint smirk playing on his lips. This was it. His final, manipulative ultimatum. He expected me to crumble, to beg for mercy.
I looked at Julian, directly into his eyes. My blood boiled, but I forced myself to remain still. To show no fear, no anger.
“This is your last chance, Leo,” Julian said, his voice mock-sympathetic. “Take the deal. Save what you have left.”
I took a slow, deliberate breath. Every fiber of my being screamed to tear the paper in half, to expose him right then and there. But I needed more time. I needed the world to see him for who he truly was.
I calmly nodded, a slow, deliberate movement. “I understand,” I said, my voice flat, betraying nothing. “I’ll sign it.”
Julian’s smirk widened. The lawyers exchanged a brief glance of satisfaction. They believed they had won. They believed I was broken, that I was feigning complete surrender to save face. Good. Let them think that.
Inside, a cold fire ignited. My surrender was a tactical retreat. The real fight was just beginning.
