Chapter 9: Following the Money

#content-1

The small guest house on the studio lot, which Maya had claimed as our temporary war room, was a tangle of scattered papers, laptop screens, and empty coffee cups. Maya, with the help of her independent forensic accountant friend, had worked through the night.

Her friend, a quiet woman named Sarah with sharp eyes behind thick-rimmed glasses, pointed to a complex diagram on a large screen.

“The $450,000 default claim,” Sarah explained, her finger moving across the illuminated lines, “was routed from V-Kross Enterprises. Not to a legitimate creditor, but through a series of shell accounts.”

Maya leaned forward, her eyes narrowed. “And where did those shell accounts lead?”

Sarah clicked a button, and a new branch of the diagram highlighted in red. “Directly to an account tied to ‘Kross Talent Management’. From there, the funds were disbursed to several individuals.”

She scrolled down, revealing names and payment dates. “Julian’s personal PR manager. And this name here,” she pointed to an unfamiliar name, “is the paparazzi photographer who posted that staged altercation video.”

A cold, hard knot formed in my stomach. Julian wasn’t just manipulating the system; he was funding his own smear campaign against me with money stolen from my father’s estate. The financial trail led directly back to him, connecting every piece of the puzzle.

Maya’s fist slammed softly on the table. “He paid them off. With our money. To ruin your reputation, Leo, and to steal your contract.”

The room was silent for a moment, save for the hum of the laptops. The evidence was overwhelming: the forged filing codes Clara had found, my father’s warning letter, Julian’s digital footprint in the archive vault, and now, the explicit financial trail.

I looked at the screens, seeing the intricate web of deception laid bare. Julian wasn’t just a competitor; he was a calculating criminal. My anger, once a raw, unthinking emotion, solidified into a cold resolve.

“We have it all,” I said, my voice quiet but firm. “Everything we need.”

Maya looked at me, a fierce determination in her eyes. “It’s time, Leo. Time for your final counter-strike.”
