Chapter 17: Solitude on the Porch (Resolution/Epilogue)

The news of the gala’s “successful” land transfer hit the wires almost immediately, splashed across every state media outlet. Drake’s camp was ecstatic, issuing press releases hailing their “philanthropic triumph.” But behind the scenes, a different kind of chaos was brewing.

My phone rang. It was Agent Chen, his voice urgent. “Senator, we have a problem. Derek Brooks just withdrew Maya from school. Unannounced. He signed her out saying it was for an ’emergency family matter’.”

My blood ran cold. Derek. He must have seen the headlines, heard the whispers. He was a weak man, prone to panic. He realized the legal trap was tightening, and his first instinct was to flee. And take Maya with him.

“Where is he going?” I demanded, my voice tight.

“His credit card just pinged at a gas station near the interstate,” Chen replied. “He bought fuel and snacks. Then a large withdrawal from an ATM. We’ve got a make and model on his vehicle. A blue 2018 Ford Escape.”

“He’s trying to take her out of state,” I said, a bitter taste in my mouth. Derek would go to ground, vanish into the vastness of another state, hoping to escape the legal consequences. He wouldn’t care about Maya’s schooling, her friends, her stability. Only his own skin.

“Georgia,” Chen confirmed. “He booked a room, cash only, at a resort near the Savannah area, under a fake name. He’s trying to cross state lines.”

I didn’t hesitate. My authority as a sitting State Senator, coupled with the rapidly escalating federal investigation into Drake and Derek’s conspiracy, gave me a narrow window.

“Initiate an immediate inter-county hold,” I commanded. “Use my authority, effective immediately. Child endangerment and flight risk. Cross-reference his vehicle with all state police and highway patrol units. Alert Georgia state authorities for an intercept.”

“On it, Senator,” Chen said, his voice crisp and professional.

I hung up, my hands trembling. The audacity. Derek was not just a weak accomplice; he was a desperate, dangerous man. His attempt to abscond with Maya was the final confirmation of his utter disregard for her well-being.

Minutes felt like hours. I paced my office, staring out at the darkening city. Every second counted. Every mile Derek put between himself and the state line was a risk to Maya.

My phone buzzed again. It was Maya.

“Grandma?” her small voice asked, a tremor in it. “Daddy says we’re going on a trip. A long, long trip. But he won’t tell me where. And he took my tablet.”

My heart ached. Drake had ordered Derek to cause emotional distress, and now Derek was intensifying it, tearing her away from everything familiar.

“Maya, listen to me,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “Everything will be alright. You’re safe. Just… stay calm. We’re coming for you.”

“He’s driving really fast,” she whispered, her voice fading. “And he’s yelling at the radio.”

“Stay on the line if you can,” I urged, but the call clicked dead. Derek must have noticed her talking to me.

I gripped my phone, my knuckles white. This was a nightmare.

An alert flashed on my secure federal terminal. A ping. Then another. And another.

“Senator,” Chen’s voice came through, calmer now. “Units have spotted his vehicle. Interstate 75 South, near the state border. Georgia State Patrol has units ready to intercept.”

I held my breath. The thought of Maya, scared and alone with a panicked Derek, was unbearable.

“Intercept confirmed,” Chen announced, a note of relief in his voice. “Vehicle safely stopped. Maya Brooks is secure. Derek Brooks is in custody.”

A wave of exhaustion washed over me, so profound it made my knees weak. Maya was safe. For now. The immediate threat of her being taken vanished.

But this desperate act was a clear escalation, a final, reckless move from a cornered animal. And it meant the net was closing in, not just on Derek, but on Harrison Drake himself.

My former son-in-law stood before the probate judge and claimed my 71-year-old hands were too fragile to care for my nine-year-old granddaughter, Maya.
