Chapter 17: Solitude on the Porch (Resolution/Epilogue)

The air in Chloe and Derek’s rented duplex crackled with a different kind of electricity. Not the celebratory glow of the gala, but the cold, hard reality of federal law enforcement. I had received the update from Agent Chen: federal agents were on site.

A few hours after Derek’s failed flight attempt, as dawn broke, federal agents from the FBI Public Integrity Section had arrived at their door. They were holding official grand jury subpoenas, crisp white papers that represented the irreversible start of a federal investigation.

Chloe, still flushed with the afterglow of her “philanthropic triumph,” opened the door. Her confident smile vanished as she saw the stern faces and official badges.

She had expected press, perhaps. Another interview about her “children’s foundation.” She got federal agents instead.

The subpoenas bore her name. Not just as a witness, but as a named party. “Chloe Albright, CEO, Albright Ventures LLC.” They listed shell companies, wire transfers, and the transfer of the Brooks Civic Trust assets. All the financial maneuvers Drake had orchestrated, now tied directly to her, through her unwitting signatures.

A wave of realization must have washed over her. Her dream life, the one Derek had promised, the one Drake had so skillfully dangled before her, was disintegrating before her eyes.

“What is this?” she reportedly stammered, her voice thin. “I don’t understand. I just signed foundation papers for a charity.”

The agents, according to Chen, were methodical. They explained the concept of a “straw buyer.” They laid out the evidence, showing her how Albright Ventures was used as a shell company to launder money, how the “charity” was a front for illegal asset acquisition.

“The Brooks Civic Trust isn’t a simple land transfer, Ms. Albright,” one agent explained, “it’s a $14 million endowment. And your company was used to try and funnel those funds into a political action committee.”

Her face crumpled. The reality hit her. She wasn’t a visionary philanthropist; she was an unwitting accomplice. A legal scapegoat.

“Derek…” she whispered, realizing the depth of his betrayal. He had brought her into this, promised her a luxurious life, all while knowing she was taking the fall.

The agents calmly informed her that Derek had been apprehended attempting to flee the state with Maya, and was currently being processed for child endangerment and obstruction of justice.

That was the final blow. The man she loved, the father of her unborn child, was a fugitive and a liar. And he had used her.

She reportedly broke down in tears, collapsing into a kitchen chair. The dream, the luxury, the baby’s future she had envisioned, all of it was built on a foundation of lies, designed by Harrison Drake, and executed through her own innocent hands.

Her naivety, her ambition, her gullible trust in Drake’s promises, had made her the perfect shield for his criminal enterprise. She had shielded him from wire fraud charges, by signing her name to every document.

But the shield had shattered.

“I didn’t know,” she reportedly sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “I swear I didn’t know.”

Agent Chen’s report concluded with a chilling detail: Chloe Albright, overwhelmed and terrified, had agreed to full cooperation. She would testify. She would hand over every document, every email, every detail of her interactions with Drake and Derek.

She might avoid prison, but her reputation, her innocence, and her dream were irrevocably shattered.

Another piece of Drake’s network had crumbled. He had used her pregnancy, her hopes, her very future, as a tool. And now, that tool had turned against him.

I thought of Maya, safe now, but still reeling from Derek’s desperate attempt. And then I thought of Chloe, another victim of Drake’s ruthlessness, even if she was an unwitting one.

The standard for a federal grand jury subpoena had been met. Drake’s empire was finally cracking under the weight of its own corruption.

My former son-in-law stood before the probate judge and claimed my 71-year-old hands were too fragile to care for my nine-year-old granddaughter, Maya.
