If you won't authorize the $35,000 credit expansion, you're worthless to this firm, my business partner snapped.
Walking back into Savor & Soul’s main kitchen felt like stepping into a different world. The staff, gathered together, burst into applause when they saw us. Relief washed over their faces. My heart swelled as I hugged them, Nia laughing and crying at the same time. The familiar sounds of knives chopping, pans clattering, the scent of fresh bread – it was all back. Ours.
We worked late into the night, reactivating accounts, calling suppliers, putting out small fires that Julian’s sudden ousting had created. The sense of purpose, of rebuilding what was rightfully ours, was invigorating. Nia and I moved through the kitchen, a united front, every touch, every glance, affirming our bond.
“It feels good to be home,” Nia whispered, leaning against me as we watched our head pastry chef meticulously pipe frosting onto a cake.
“It does,” I agreed, a genuine smile finally touching my lips. “Thanks to you. And Kendra.”
But as I finally settled at my desk, sifting through the stacks of mail that had accumulated, a sleek, cream-colored envelope caught my eye. The return address was unfamiliar, a law firm out of Florida. My heart sank, a familiar dread creeping in.
I tore it open. The formal language of legal documents stared back at me. It was a civil summons.
My eyes scanned the text, the blood draining from my face. “Julian has filed a personal civil suit against me,” I said, my voice flat, holding out the papers to Nia.
She took them, her brow furrowing as she read. “Tortious interference. Defamation. He’s claiming you deliberately sabotaged Savor & Soul’s operations by making false accusations.”
“He’s suing me for exposing his crimes?” I asked, disbelief coloring my tone. “After everything?”
“It seems he is,” Nia confirmed, her lips pressed into a thin line. “He’s still trying to ruin you, Marcus. Even without his board seat.”
The initial euphoria of our victory evaporated, replaced by the chilling reality of Julian’s relentless malice. He had lost the company, lost his power, but he still had his wealth, his network of lawyers, and his obsession. He wouldn’t stop. He would simply shift tactics, launching a new front in his war against me.
I clenched my fists. This wasn’t a clean victory. It was a reprieve. A temporary calm before the next storm. Julian’s goal was still the same: to drain me financially, to break my spirit through endless legal battles. He would keep coming, relentlessly. The legal shadow stretched long and dark, an ongoing threat that would loom over every success, every triumph. We had regained our kitchen, but the fight was far from over.
