If you won't authorize the $35,000 credit expansion, you're worthless to this firm, my business partner snapped.
My attorney, David Chen, sat at his large oak desk, his expression grim as he reviewed Kendra’s signed affidavit and the intricate spreadsheets on the tablet she provided. Nia and I sat opposite him, holding our breath, waiting for his assessment.
“This is… comprehensive,” David finally said, pushing his glasses up his nose. His eyes, usually cool and analytical, held a hint of shock.
He tapped a finger on one of Kendra’s spreadsheets. “These accounts. Offshore. Used for speculative trading, you said, Kendra?”
Kendra, who had joined us in the office, nodded. “Gambling debts, mostly. He blew through a fortune. These transfers total over $120,000 from Savor & Soul’s investor capital.”
My blood ran cold. $120,000. Julian had been pilfering from the company, from *our* company, to feed his own reckless habits. It wasn’t just about my bankruptcy or freezing my accounts. He was bleeding Savor & Soul dry.
“And this,” David said, pointing to another section, “is even more damning for the board.”
He turned the tablet to us. There were emails, internal memos from Julian, detailing a series of meetings. Meetings with a “Prosperity Capital Group.”
“Julian was negotiating to sell Savor & Soul,” David explained, his voice flat. “Behind the board’s back. To a private equity firm.”
Nia gasped. “Sell Savor & Soul? Without board approval? Or my consent as a co-founder?”
“It seems he intended to,” David confirmed, his gaze fixed on the screen. “And Prosperity Capital’s internal notes mention a ‘staff restructuring’ post-acquisition. Meaning, they planned to purge all existing staff. Including you, Marcus, Nia, everyone who built this place.”
The realization hit me like a physical blow. Julian wasn’t just trying to get rid of me; he was trying to liquidate the entire company, sell it off for parts, discard everyone who’d poured their heart into it. His plan was far more ruthless, far more expansive than I had imagined.
“This isn’t just internal malfeasance,” David stated, his voice hardening. “This is a direct breach of his fiduciary duty. Fraud. Potentially criminal, depending on how aggressively the board chooses to pursue it.”
“The board,” I repeated, the word tasting bitter. They had blamed me. They had demanded I step down.
“They won’t be able to ignore this,” David said, a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes. “This affidavit, coupled with these records, paints a picture of deliberate, systemic deception. They were negligent in their oversight, but they cannot afford to cover up active fraud on this scale.”
He closed the tablet with a decisive snap. “We demand an immediate emergency board hearing. With this evidence, they have no choice but to convene.”
A surge of adrenaline coursed through me. The feeling of powerlessness that had plagued me for weeks began to recede. We had the truth. We had the paper trail. And with Kendra’s courage, we finally had a chance to expose Julian for the fraud he truly was. The storm wasn’t over, but we finally had a weapon to fight back.
