Chapter 12: The Endless Ocean Rain

The federal courthouse parking lot was a scene of controlled chaos. Floodlights, hastily set up by news crews, turned the late afternoon into a harsh, artificial glare. I stood across the street, a nondescript figure in a dark coat, watching from behind a row of parked cars. Sarah Lin, recognizable by her sharp posture and the bright *New York Ledger* microphone, was already embedded with the camera crews.

A sleek black Mercedes sedan, Carmine Rosati’s usual ride, pulled into the lot. It was just after 4:00 PM. He’d clearly been at his lawyer’s office, attempting to salvage what little remained.

As the car came to a stop, two unmarked federal SUVs flanked it, blocking it in. The doors of the SUVs burst open, and a squad of federal marshals, stern and unyielding, moved with practiced precision.

Carmine, clad in an expensive but now disheveled suit, emerged from his car. He saw the marshals, then the blinding lights of the news cameras, and his face, usually a mask of cold confidence, crumpled into a bewildered scowl.

“Mr. Rosati!” Sarah Lin called out, pushing her microphone forward. “What is your comment on the federal indictment for racketeering and the murder of Mateo Varga?”

Carmine’s eyes darted around, searching for an escape. He mumbled something incoherent, a string of denials that were swallowed by the cacophony of camera shutters and shouted questions. His eyes, for a brief second, locked with mine across the street. There was no rage, no menace, just a flicker of shocked recognition, quickly replaced by a desperate aversion. He looked small, exposed, a cornered animal caught in the public eye.

One of the marshals, a tall, no-nonsense woman, stepped forward, producing a document. “Carmine Rosati, you are under arrest.”

She began to read his rights, her voice calm and authoritative, cutting through the din. Carmine tried to pull away, to protest, but two marshals gently, firmly, guided his arms behind his back. The handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, final sound.

He continued to mumble, shaking his head, trying to deny the undeniable. He looked pathetic, stripped of his power, his carefully constructed facade shattered under the harsh glare of public scrutiny. There was no dramatic shootout, no grand confrontation. Just an awkward, humiliating arrest in a parking lot, amidst the mundane backdrop of legal proceedings.

He was bundled into the back of an unmarked cruiser. As the door slammed shut, cutting him off from the world he had once commanded, a wave of reporters surged forward, shouting questions at the marshals.

Sarah Lin turned to the camera, her expression somber but resolute. “Carmine Rosati, the alleged capo of a powerful Staten Island crime syndicate, has been taken into federal custody today, following an extensive investigation into racketeering, financial fraud, and the tragic murder of Mateo Varga.”

I watched the cruiser pull away, disappearing into the city traffic. It was over. The man who had taken everything from me was finally caught. But the victory felt hollow, tinged with a profound sadness. There would be no satisfaction in his downfall, only the cold emptiness that Mateo had left behind. The cameras, the flashing lights, the justice served – none of it could fill the void. I turned my back on the clamoring reporters, on the public spectacle, and walked away. There was only one place I needed to be now.
