Chapter 21: Birthday Solitude

I met Detective Bennett in a secure, nondescript room at the State Police headquarters. The handwritten letter, now carefully sealed in an evidence bag, lay between us on the conference table. Bennett read it slowly, his expression growing darker with each line.

“Hallowell,” he muttered, tracing the adjuster’s name with his finger. “Jason wasn’t just working with him; he knew he was ‘reliable’.”

“This confirms everything,” I said, my voice firm. “The bribery, the cover-up, the insurance fraud. It’s all connected.”

“This letter is critical,” Bennett agreed, looking up, his eyes hard. “Combined with the hydraulic shear marks on your power lines and the offshore wire transfer to Callahan, we have a very strong case. Strong enough to get federal involvement.”

He picked up his phone. “I’m going to push for an emergency federal wiretap authorization on Hallowell’s phone. This letter gives us probable cause for conspiracy and fraud.”

The waiting was agonizing. For hours, Bennett worked, making calls, filling out forms, pushing through bureaucratic hurdles. Finally, late that afternoon, he received confirmation. The wiretap was live.

We sat in a small, windowless room, headphones on, listening to a static-laced feed. Most of the calls were mundane, Apex Mutual business. My hope began to wane. Maybe Hallowell was too careful.

Then, a new call came through. The caller ID flashed: “Unknown Number.” Bennett adjusted the volume, signaling to me.

“Hallowell,” a voice said, low and urgent. It was Jason Brock. There was no mistaking that distinctive, smooth tone.

“Jason, everything’s been handled,” Hallowell replied, a nervous edge to his voice. “The payout’s through, Emily’s claim is denied. Everything’s moving according to plan.”

“No, it’s not ‘handled’, Donald,” Jason snapped, his voice sharper than I’d ever heard it. “The state police are nosing around. That Detective Bennett is persistent. I need you to secure the death certificate sign-off.”

My breath caught. Death certificate. He still wanted me officially dead.

“But… she’s alive, Jason,” Hallowell stammered, clearly flustered.

“I don’t care about the details,” Jason hissed. “I care about the paperwork. Push it through. Classify her ‘incapacitation’ as permanent. Fast-track it before the state police push for a forensic audit of the compound. We don’t want them digging up anything else.”

“Forensic audit,” Hallowell repeated, his voice barely a whisper. “But they’ve already started. They found the power lines, Jason. The… the marks.”

A tense silence stretched through the line. I could almost feel Jason’s fury radiating through the phone.

“You incompetent fool,” Jason finally spat, his voice laced with venom. “I told you to handle it! I specifically said to make sure there was no evidence!”

“I… I tried,” Hallowell stammered. “Callahan assured me everything was covered.”

“Callahan is a small-time sheriff playing with big boys,” Jason sneered. “Forget Callahan. You need to wipe those local server logs at Apex. Make sure there’s no digital footprint of our communications regarding these ‘adjustments’.”

“I’ll… I’ll get on it right away,” Hallowell promised, his voice cracking with fear.

The call ended. I pulled off my headphones, my hand shaking. They weren’t just covering up an old crime; they were actively plotting a new one, attempting to legally erase me.

Bennett, his face grim, simply looked at me. “He’s escalating, Emily. And Hallowell just admitted to evidence tampering on a federal wiretap.”

The recorded conversation, combined with Jason’s handwritten blueprint, cemented their guilt. It was no longer speculation. It was undeniable proof.

My senior business partner told the board he was boarding an eleven-hour flight to Zurich for an emergency investment summit.
