My senior business partner told the board he was boarding an eleven-hour flight to Zurich for an emergency investment summit.
The fallout from Nina Ray’s broadcast and Callahan’s spectacular self-sabotage was immense. Federal agents were now actively involved, and the investigation was quickly escalating. Jason, however, remained elusive, his legal team issuing bland statements of denial, but his whereabouts were unknown.
Margaret Danforth, the calculating board chair, suddenly re-emerged. Her $12,000,000 investment was at risk, her family wealth threatened by the rapidly unfolding scandal. She knew Jason was a liability, and she was moving to protect herself.
Sarah Lindqvist received a text message late that night: an invitation to a midnight meeting with Margaret. The location was a secluded, opulent suite at a downtown hotel.
“She wants the letter,” Sarah stated, her face pale as she showed me the message. “Jason’s handwritten blueprint. She’ll offer anything to get her hands on it before the feds do.”
“And to make you recant,” I added, remembering Margaret’s ruthless pragmatism. “To undermine Nina Ray’s story.”
“She’s desperate,” Bennett agreed, who was with us. “This is a direct attempt to obstruct justice. We need to document it.”
Nina Ray, always prepared, immediately supplied Sarah with a tiny, high-fidelity audio recorder, disguised as a button on her blazer. “Get everything,” Nina instructed. “Every word. Every offer. And don’t give her the original letter.”
Sarah, despite her fear, nodded. This was her chance to finally get justice for David.
That night, Sarah walked into the luxurious hotel suite. Margaret Danforth was waiting, perched elegantly on a velvet armchair, a small, silver briefcase resting on the coffee table in front of her.
“Sarah, thank you for coming,” Margaret said, her voice smooth and devoid of any real warmth. “Let’s be candid. This situation with Jason has spiraled out of control.”
“It’s about time someone admitted it,” Sarah replied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.
Margaret sighed, then gestured to the briefcase. “I understand you possess a… rather inflammatory document. A letter. From Jason.”
“I do,” Sarah confirmed. “It details how he murdered my brother and tried to murder Emily. And it implicates Donald Hallowell, and by extension, the entire corporate board.”
Margaret winced slightly at the word “murdered.” “Such accusations are damaging, Sarah. For everyone involved. Especially for those of us who have invested so much into Brock Bio-Tech.”
She opened the briefcase. Inside, neatly stacked, were thick bundles of crisp, unsequential bearer bonds. Each bundle was clearly marked for a significant sum.
“Two million dollars, Sarah,” Margaret offered, her eyes fixed on Sarah’s face. “Untraceable, liquid cash. All yours.”
Sarah’s breath hitched. Two million dollars. It was more money than she had ever seen. The temptation, after six years of silence and fear, was a powerful pull.
“In exchange,” Margaret continued, her voice soft but firm, “you will hand over the original handwritten letter. And tomorrow morning, you will issue a public statement, recanting your allegations on national television. You will state that the letter was a forgery, and your claims were based on emotional distress and a misunderstanding.”
Sarah’s mind raced. Two million dollars for her silence, for the suppression of justice. For David’s death to remain unpunished.
“Think of it, Sarah,” Margaret pressed, sensing her hesitation. “A new life. You can disappear, start over, far away from all this ugliness. And Brock Bio-Tech can recover.”
Sarah looked at the stacks of money, then at Margaret’s cold, calculating eyes. This wasn’t about restitution; it was about erasing the truth.
“And David?” Sarah asked, her voice tight. “Does this ‘new life’ bring David back?”
Margaret simply shrugged, a dismissive gesture. “Regrettably, some losses cannot be recovered. But you can secure your future, and protect your own family from further entanglement.”
The offer hung in the air, heavy and corrupt. Sarah felt the button recorder pressed against her chest, a silent reminder of her true purpose.
