The news of Arthur Pendelton’s arrest spread through Oakhaven Memorial like wildfire, igniting a fresh wave of panic among the administration. Eleanor, sensing the noose tightening, immediately called an emergency board meeting.

The atmosphere in the boardroom was electric with tension. Trustees sat stiffly, their gazes fixed on Eleanor. Chloe, looking pale and distraught, sat beside her mother, her surgical coat clutched in her lap.

“Gentlemen,” Eleanor began, her voice strained but still trying to project authority, “it appears Mr. Pendelton acted… outside of established protocol.”

Uncle Richard scoffed, a low, guttural sound. “He was shredding documents, Eleanor. While under federal surveillance.”

Eleanor ignored him. She slid a stack of clinical intake forms across the table. They were pristine, official-looking documents.

“These are patient intake forms,” she explained, her voice gaining a false strength. “Specifically for the pediatric clinical trial program.”

She pointed to a digital signature at the bottom of each form. “You’ll note the signature. Dr. Chloe Snyder.”

Chloe’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock.

“It appears Chloe,” Eleanor continued, turning to face her daughter with a chilling lack of emotion, “managed patient intake independently. And, regrettably, falsified trial documents to pad her residency evaluation metrics.”

A collective murmur went through the room. Chloe, her face a mask of utter devastation, slowly shook her head.

“No,” Chloe whispered, her voice cracking. “That’s not true.”

Eleanor leaned closer to Chloe, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper only audible to those nearby. “You will corroborate this, Chloe. Or your residency is over. Your entire career.”

Tears streamed down Chloe’s face. She looked from her mother to the impassive faces of the board members, then back to the forms. The weight of her mother’s betrayal, so naked and public, crushed her.

“She forced me,” Chloe choked out, her voice rising in anguish. “She forced me to sign blank compliance sheets.”

She slammed her hand down on the table, the sound echoing through the room.

“Under threat of ending my surgical residency!” Chloe cried, her carefully constructed world collapsing around her. “She made me! She would end my career if I didn’t!”

The board members exchanged shocked glances. Eleanor’s face remained frozen, a mask of cold fury. Chloe’s confession, a desperate plea for self-preservation, shattered the last illusion of family unity. My mother was willing to sacrifice her own daughter to save herself.
