My Mother Excluded My Sick 8-Year-Old Daughter From a Hospital Gala — Until My Daughter Took the DJ Microphone and Played Her Secret Texts
Two days later, a summons arrived. Not from a court, but from Eleanor.
An “emergency family council,” she called it, to be held at Uncle Richard’s sprawling estate on the outskirts of Oakhaven. The request came through a family lawyer, not directly from her.
I arrived with Lily, the heavy air in the grand foyer feeling thick with judgment. My mother, Chloe, Uncle Richard, and several other extended relatives I barely knew were already seated around a polished oak table. Their expressions ranged from pity to outright disdain.
Eleanor sat at the head, radiating an icy calm. She motioned for me to sit.
“Maya,” she began, her voice carefully modulated, “this entire incident has caused irreparable damage to the family reputation. And Oakhaven’s standing.”
She slid a document across the table. It was a signed trust fund agreement, drafted in Lily’s name.
“We are prepared to establish a half-million dollar trust,” Eleanor said, “specifically for Lily’s private medical care. The best facilities, anywhere in the world.”
My eyes widened. “$500,000?”
“On one condition,” she interjected, her gaze locking with mine. “You must sign this.”
She pushed another document towards me: a sworn affidavit. It stated that I, Maya Snyder, admitted to fabricating the text messages projected at the gala. It claimed I used generative AI software out of financial jealousy.
“Admit it was all a hoax,” she urged, her voice softer now, almost coaxing. “We can put this behind us. Lily gets her care, no questions asked.”
I picked up the affidavit, my fingers tracing the legalese. The words blurred, a sickening betrayal of the truth.
“You want me to lie?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. “After what you did to Lily?”
Eleanor’s composure cracked, just for a moment. “What I did was protect the hospital. And our family.”
“No,” I said, pushing the affidavit back across the table. “I won’t sign it.”
A muscle in Eleanor’s jaw twitched. Uncle Richard cleared his throat, his face a mask of disappointment.
“Maya,” he interjected, his voice gravelly. “The family has retained a legal team. We’re preparing to petition family court for emergency guardianship of Lily.”
My blood ran cold. “Guardianship? You can’t be serious.”
“Your current lack of steady income, your terminated employment, and your… volatile mental state,” he continued, gesturing vaguely in my direction, “makes you an unfit parent.”
Chloe watched me, a flicker of twisted satisfaction in her eyes. She actually believed I was mentally unstable.
They were going to take Lily from me. To use her as leverage. This wasn’t just about money or reputation. It was about control.
