My Husband Claimed My Sister Died In A Mansion Fire 20 Years Ago — Then A Flower Girl Showed Me Her Twin Ring And Revealed The Truth
Julian’s contractors moved like shadows, their footsteps crunching on the gravel outside, their voices low and guttural. The air inside the sawmill grew heavy with tension, thick with the smell of old wood and impending violence. Lily whimpered again, her small hand clutching Maeve’s jacket.
“This is your last chance,” Julian’s voice cut through the air, closer now. “Walk out with the documents, or we come in.”
A contractor kicked at the shed door. The metal groaned.
Suddenly, the generator powering the single flickering light in the main mill building coughed once, then died. Darkness engulfed the entire sawmill complex, a sudden, absolute blackness that swallowed everything. The only light came from the distant, angry glow of Julian’s vehicle headlights, now seeming miles away.
Chaos erupted.
“What the hell was that?” Julian bellowed, his voice laced with frustrated fury.
I heard a grunt, a heavy thud, then the distinct clang of a dropped rifle.
“Someone’s down!” a contractor yelled.
Another thud, closer. A gasp.
“Kincaid!” Julian screamed, his voice raw with disbelief and betrayal. “You son of a—”
Marcus. He had made his move. From within Julian’s own perimeter.
“Go!” Maeve hissed, pulling Lily towards a gap in the shed wall. “Now, Clara!”
I didn’t hesitate. The darkness was our only shield. I scrambled through the narrow opening after them, my hands scraping against splintered wood.
Outside, the air was cold and wet, the rain still falling. The dense forest loomed, a wall of black against the distant, stormy horizon. We plunged into the undergrowth, Maeve leading the way, pulling Lily with surprising speed.
Behind us, the sawmill exploded into a cacophony of shouts, gunfire, and Julian’s enraged roars.
“They’re heading into the woods!” one of his contractors yelled.
A spray of bullets tore through the branches above us, leaves showering down like rain. Julian was firing blindly into the darkness, his anger a palpable force.
“I will hunt you down!” his voice carried through the trees, filled with venom. “No matter where you hide, Clara! Maeve! I will find you!”
We ran, scrambling over roots and through thorny bushes, the sounds of the struggle fading behind us, replaced by the pounding of my own heart and the frantic rustle of leaves underfoot. The darkness was absolute, broken only by flashes of lightning in the distance.
Marcus. He had bought us precious seconds, a window of chaos. But it wasn’t a victory, not yet. Julian was wounded, furious, and highly dangerous. And now, we were truly alone in the wilderness, hunted by a man who had already proven he would stop at nothing.
