The abandoned coastal sawmill outside Tillamook stood like a decaying skeleton against the stormy Pacific sky. Its skeletal timbers groaned in the wind, and the air was thick with the smell of saltwater and rotting wood. Maeve, Lily, and I were inside, huddled in the relative shelter of a storage shed, the heavy deeds and bearer bonds bundled in a canvas bag.

“He found us, didn’t he?” Maeve asked, her eyes scanning the gaps in the corrugated metal walls. Her voice was tight with anticipation.

I nodded, my stomach a cold knot. The silent alarms at his safe house must have alerted him the moment Maeve left. He was ruthless, efficient. He wouldn’t delay.

A moment later, the distinct crunch of tires on gravel announced his arrival. A powerful SUV, followed by a dark truck, pulled up, boxing in the single entrance to the sawmill. Headlights cut through the gloom, illuminating the dilapidated structures.

“Stay behind me, Lily,” Maeve whispered, pulling her daughter closer. Her hand went to the familiar knife at her hip.

Julian emerged from the SUV, his figure imposing even in the dim light. Four other men, broad-shouldered and armed with tactical rifles, fanned out behind him, moving with chilling precision. Private contractors, no doubt. Julian wasn’t playing.

“Clara! Maeve!” Julian’s voice boomed across the yard, distorted by the wind, but sharp with fury. “You have nowhere to run.”

He gestured towards the thick coastal forest that pressed in around the sawmill.

“The woods are tracked. The road is blocked. You’re trapped.”

He walked closer, stopping just outside the shed, his eyes burning with a dangerous intensity. The sight of him, so utterly confident in his power, made my blood run cold.

“I have two choices for you,” Julian called out, holding up two fingers. “First, you hand over my property, and you sign the commitment papers for Clara. Then, perhaps, I’ll let the child go.”

He paused, letting his threat hang in the air. Lily whimpered softly, pressing her face into Maeve’s side.

“Or,” he continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl, “none of you leave this coast alive. It will look like a tragic accident. A desperate escape gone wrong.”

My mind raced. We were cornered. Six against three, if you counted Lily. And his men were armed. This wasn’t a negotiation; it was an execution.

“You won’t get away with this, Julian!” I shouted back, my voice trembling but firm. “You’re a murderer! A thief!”

Julian threw his head back and laughed, a chilling, humorless sound that echoed through the decaying mill.

“Who will believe you, Clara? A dead woman and a madwoman? No one will ever find your bodies in this wilderness.”

His men began to advance, spreading out, their rifles glinting dully in the dim light. One of them kicked open a nearby door, sending a cloud of dust into the air.

This was it. The climax of his reign of terror. He wanted the deeds, and he wanted us gone. He had sealed off every escape, every avenue.

“We need a distraction,” Maeve whispered, her eyes darting around the shed. “Something loud. Something chaotic.”

But what? We had nothing. Just the canvas bag of stolen documents, and a child. Julian’s men were closing in, their footsteps heavy on the dusty floorboards. The final choice was upon us.
