Chapter 13: Coffee and Wooden Blocks

The building groaned again, a different sound this time. A low hum.

Then, with a sudden surge, the emergency backup generators kicked on. The fluorescent lights flickered, buzzed, and then burst back to life, bathing the executive suite in a stark, clinical glow. The electronic doors hissed, unlocking.

The transition from absolute darkness to blinding light was disorienting. Kenneth, caught in the sudden illumination, stood frozen in the middle of the room, his face pale and contorted with fear.

The heavy suite doors swung open. Building security and a team of internal compliance auditors, who must have been waiting for the power to return, flooded onto the forty-second floor.

Their eyes immediately fell on Kenneth. He was frantic, trying to stuff papers into a small shredder by his desk, his hands shaking. Altered balance sheets, hastily rewritten in the dark.

“Kenneth Albright,” the head of security barked, his voice sharp. “Cease and desist. You are under arrest.”

Kenneth let out a strangled cry, lunging for a bag. But two security guards were on him in an instant, restraining him.

“This is ridiculous!” Kenneth shrieked, struggling. “Arthur set me up! He’s the one! It was his plan!”

“We have a signed statement,” the security chief said, holding up the red ledger with Arthur’s confession. “From Mr. Ross himself.”

Kenneth’s eyes, full of desperate fury, darted to Arthur, then to me, then to Leo, who was still clutching his empty backpack. He knew.

Paramedics, who had been on standby in the lobby, rushed in. They moved swiftly to Arthur, checking his pulse, his breathing, administering oxygen.

“Mr. Ross, we need to get you to St. Luke’s,” one paramedic said, already preparing a stretcher. “Cardiac incident.”

Arthur waved a weak hand, pushing away the oxygen mask. “No,” he rasped, his gaze fixed on me. “I’m staying here. With my son.”

The paramedics exchanged a look. “Sir, your condition requires immediate attention.”

“I said no,” Arthur insisted, his voice gaining a surprising strength. He managed to sit up further, his eyes locked on mine. “Julian, the firm. Make it right.”

I nodded, feeling a complex mix of emotions warring within me: anger, relief, a profound sadness, and a glimmer of hope. “I will, Dad. I promise.”

Kenneth, now handcuffed, was being led away, still yelling protests, his voice fading down the hall. His frantic attempts to destroy evidence, caught in the returning light, had sealed his fate. The greed, the manipulation, the betrayal—all exposed.

Arthur refused to be moved. He leaned back against the desk, exhausted but resolute. The storm outside was receding, the rain tapering to a drizzle. The immediate crisis was over, but the aftermath, the dismantling of a lifetime of pride and deceit, was just beginning. And Arthur, for the first time in perhaps decades, seemed ready to face it.
