Thaddeus Winslow’s gaze locked onto the ledger. His face, usually a mask of control, contorted into a snarl of pure rage. He reached for the heavy brass letter opener on his desk, his knuckles white.

“You scheming little viper!” he hissed, his voice trembling. “You think this little book can touch me? My influence reaches every judge, every politician in this city! My $2,400,000 fortune guarantees my immunity!”

He pounded the desk with his free hand. “They’re just papers, Clara! They prove nothing! I’ll claim they’re forgeries. I’ll accuse you of extortion! You will rot in prison, and Martha Finch with you, for aiding a criminal!”

His breath came in ragged gasps, his eyes burning with frantic fury. He believed his wealth, his connections, his sheer power, rendered him untouchable. He believed my threats were empty, that I had no real recourse against him.

“You underestimate me, Thaddeus,” I said, my voice calm despite the storm raging inside him. I could feel the heat radiating from his anger across the desk.

He laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. “Underestimate you? You are a desperate woman, cast out, with nothing but spite and a few meaningless papers! You think you can outwit Thaddeus Winslow? The architect of this city’s might? I decide what is truth and what is fabrication!”

He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. “Even if your precious auditors arrived, what would they hear? The ravings of a disgraced wife? My word against yours? My word is gold, Clara. Yours is dirt.”

I met his gaze, unflinching. “No,” I corrected him, my voice barely above a whisper. “Your word is gold to those you pay. But the truth speaks for itself.”

I rose from my chair, keeping my eyes on his. He remained seated, glowering at me, still clutching the letter opener. He had no idea what was about to happen.

I turned slowly and walked to the double doors that separated Thaddeus’s private study from the adjoining parlor. They were intricately carved, usually kept shut and locked. Thaddeus had no reason to believe anyone was on the other side.

He watched me, his expression a mixture of confusion and contempt. “What are you doing? There’s no one there. No one but you and me.”

My hand reached for the polished brass handles. They turned with a soft click.

I pulled open the heavy double doors, revealing the adjoining parlor.

The room was not empty.

Seated around a large, ornate table, a small fire glowing in its own hearth, were four men in dark, sober suits. Major Nathaniel Briggs stood among them, his uniform crisp, his face grim. Federal war auditors.

They had been there the entire time. Silently listening. Hearing every boast, every denial, every furious, self-incriminating word that had spilled from Thaddeus Winslow’s lips. His confession, his casual admission of immense wealth and political influence, his contempt for the law—all laid bare.

Thaddeus Winslow’s eyes widened. The brass letter opener clattered from his suddenly nerveless fingers onto the mahogany desk. His face, which had been flushed with rage, went ashen. He had built his empire on secrets, and now, his most damning ones had been exposed not by a whisper, but by his own voice.
