Chapter 15: 9 Days Later at the Ruined Wharf

A persistent tapping at Martha’s parlor window roused me from a restless sleep. The grandfather clock in the hall chimed twice, marking two o’clock in the morning.

I rose quietly, my hand instinctively going to the ledger hidden beneath my bedclothes. Peeking through the lace curtains, I saw Julian Winslow, my husband, standing outside in the dim glow of the gas lamp. His face was pale and drawn, his shoulders hunched.

Martha was a deep sleeper. I unlatched the front door, letting him slip inside before locking it again. The scent of damp night air clung to his expensive wool coat.

“Julian,” I whispered, keeping my voice low. “What are you doing here?”

He wrung his hands, his gaze darting around the modest parlor as if expecting his father to materialize. “Clara, you must listen to me. This has gone too far.”

I offered no comfort. My heart had hardened against him.

“Father found the secret compartment empty,” Julian blurted, his voice frantic. “He tore the study apart. He knows the ledger is missing.”

My stomach clenched. So Thaddeus had realized the true nature of what I held. This wasn’t just about my dignity anymore.

“And he knows you took it,” Julian continued, wringing his hands again. “He threatened… he threatened to cut me off entirely. Disinherit me, Clara! Everything.”

He paced the small space, his boots silent on the rug. “He said if I don’t get it back by morning, I will lose everything. The house, the business, my inheritance. All of it.”

He stopped before me, his eyes wide and desperate. “Please, Clara. Just give me the document. I’ll tell him you returned it. He’ll forgive you. We can go back to how things were.”

A bitter laugh escaped me. “How things were? You mean, you beating me and my father-in-law striking me in front of sixty guests? You mean, you publicly disowning me and freezing my bank account?”

“No, no! It wasn’t like that!” Julian pleaded, his voice cracking. “Father was simply enraged. He didn’t mean to disinherit me, not really. Not if I can fix this.”

His desperation was a stark, ugly thing. He wasn’t concerned for my safety, my reputation, or the injustice done to me. He only cared about his own comfort, his lavish lifestyle, and the inheritance he felt entitled to.

“He said… he said he’d pay off my debts if I brought it back,” Julian added, almost as an afterthought. “$18,000 to the war brokers. They’re demanding payment, Clara. They’ll come for me.”

My blood ran cold. $18,000 in gambling debts. I remembered the coded entries in the ledger, the precise sums.

“You signed those inspection certificates, didn’t you, Julian?” I asked, my voice low and steady. “To cover your gambling losses, you approved low-grade iron for the Union Army.”

His face drained of color. He took a stumbling step back.

“No,” he whispered, shaking his head rapidly. “No, I… I didn’t know. Father just told me to sign them. Said it was routine. Please, Clara. Give it to me. He will ruin us both.”

His frantic words, his fear, only strengthened my resolve. He was a coward, complicit in his father’s crimes, utterly devoid of a moral compass.

“Get out, Julian,” I said, pointing to the door. “Now.”
