Chapter 13: Unbroken Waters

The next morning, the air at Oakridge High felt charged, heavy with an unusual tension. Whispers still traveled through the hallways, but they had changed their tune. Now, they were about Coach Bennett.

Principal Vance made the announcement during the morning assembly, her voice somber. “Due to serious allegations brought forward regarding his conduct during his previous tenure at the state athletic center, Coach Arthur Bennett has been placed on temporary administrative leave, effective immediately.”

A stunned silence fell over the gymnasium. Then, a wave of murmurs, confused and angry, erupted.

“Pending a multi-year state investigation,” Vance continued, her gaze sweeping across the bewildered faces of the students. “The district will cooperate fully with the state athletic ethics board.”

The football team, especially, erupted in shouts and frustrated groans. Brandon Albright, his face red with anger, slammed his fist against a bleacher.

“Are you serious, Principal Vance?” someone yelled. “Our championship season starts next month! What about our leadership?”

“This is Maya’s fault!” another voice shouted. “She just made it all up!”

The student body remained deeply divided. Many of the football players, their hopes for recruitment and a winning season suddenly thrown into chaos, saw me as the cause of their misfortune. They blamed me for ruining their athletic leadership, for creating “drama” that jeopardized their futures. Their hostile glares followed me through the day.

Even some teachers, who had initially believed Bennett’s narrative of my “instability,” now looked at me with a new, wary curiosity. The official statement from the principal had shifted the narrative, but not entirely. There was still an underlying current of misunderstanding, a sense that I was a trouble-maker.

I accepted their isolation without complaint. Their anger, their confusion—it was all secondary. My focus was entirely on Leo.

I spent my lunch break in the empty library, reviewing applications for a different kind of future. Community college brochures lay spread out on the table. Nursing programs, administrative assistant courses. Practical skills, a reliable income. It wasn’t the Division I scholarship, the bright, exhilarating future I had once envisioned, but it was a path. A solid path to support Leo.

My phone vibrated with a text message. It was from Sarah Jenkins.

*He’s gone, Maya. Thank you.*

A small, genuine smile touched my lips. Bennett was suspended. The first step was complete. The long, winding road of the state investigation, and the even longer, more arduous civil lawsuit, stretched before me. It would be a fight. A relentless, draining fight.

But I had struck a blow. I had put a permanent stop to his ability to coach young athletes. That was what mattered. The rest, I would face, day by day, for Leo.

The whispers still followed me, but they no longer held power. They were just noise. I walked through them, head held high, looking towards a horizon that, while different, was finally mine to choose.
