Chapter 14: Nine Days Later

The Buckhead gala, a glittering display of Atlanta’s political elite, finally wound down. Eleanor, flushed with the perceived success of another night cementing her influence, waved goodbye to a few lingering council members. She settled into the back of her luxury sedan, her driver taking the familiar route back to the Maynard estate.

The night air was cool, the city lights fading as they approached the quiet, tree-lined street. The grand gates, usually gliding open at her approach, remained stubbornly closed.

“What’s the hold-up?” Eleanor snapped, a frown creasing her brow.

The driver tried the access code again. “Ma’am, it’s not working. The code’s been changed.”

Eleanor scoffed. “Impossible. Try the old one. My son is playing games.”

He tried again. Nothing. The gates remained shut, a silent, unyielding barrier.

“Fine,” she fumed, “take the service entrance. The key cards always work.”

They drove around to the side of the property. The driver swiped her electronic key card at the pedestrian gate. A red light flashed. “Denied, ma’am.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed. This was beyond a game. This was deliberate.

“Force it,” she commanded, her voice laced with an icy edge.

The driver, a burly man who had worked for the family for years, looked uncomfortable. “Ma’am, I don’t think—”

“I said force it!” Her voice rose, sharp and imperious.

He heaved against the gate, but it was solid, reinforced. The new locks held firm.

Eleanor, her face a mask of fury, stormed out of the car. She walked around the perimeter, her expensive heels sinking slightly into the soft earth. Her gaze landed on the study, the room she considered her private sanctuary, the very heart of her domain.

The French doors leading to the side terrace, usually secured with a simple latch, stood slightly ajar. Someone had clearly forced them open from the outside, a tell-tale splinter in the wood frame.

She pushed past the broken doors, stalking into the dark study. The air inside was heavy, still. The faint glow of city lights filtered through the windows, casting long, distorted shadows across the familiar furniture.

And then she saw him.

Marcus.

He sat in her father’s old leather armchair, a silent sentinel in the dim light. He hadn’t turned on a single lamp. He was just waiting, his posture unnervingly calm.

The silence in the room stretched, thick with unspoken accusations, with years of control and resentment finally coming to a head. Eleanor’s breath hitched. She had expected defiance, anger, tears. Not this cold, quiet resolve.

He didn’t move, didn’t speak. He just watched her, his eyes unblinking in the gloom. The reckoning had arrived.
