My Mother Forced My Pregnant Wife to Wash Her Feet in a Silver Basin — Then I Discovered She Stole $684,000 From My Campaign Fund
Armed with the sworn testimony, I felt a surge of confidence, a quiet fury. Eleanor had made her bed. Now it was time for her to lie in it.
My first priority, however, was Maya. Her prenatal appointment was scheduled for that afternoon. The stress of the past few days had taken its toll, and I wanted to ensure she and the baby were safe and calm.
We were in the waiting room of Dr. Evans’s clinic, the pastel walls and soft music doing little to soothe my underlying tension. Maya sat beside me, her hand resting on her swollen belly.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over us. I looked up. TJ stood there, a smug, predatory grin on his face. He held his phone, not even bothering to pretend he wasn’t recording.
“Well, well, well,” he drawled, his eyes sweeping over Maya’s pregnant form. “Look at the happy couple. Still clinging to that dead man’s documents, are we, Marcus?”
My body tensed. I squeezed Maya’s hand. “Get out of here, TJ.”
“Oh, I don’t think so,” he sneered, stepping closer. “Word on the street is you’re trying to cause trouble for Mom. Messing with the Foundation, digging into old accounts.”
He leaned in conspiratorially, his voice dropping, but still loud enough to be caught by his phone. “You wouldn’t want any unfortunate rumors spreading, would you? About how this stressful pregnancy came about? Maybe some… marital discord? A little push and shove, perhaps, leading to poor Maya’s delicate condition?”
My blood ran cold. He was threatening to fabricate domestic abuse allegations, to tie Maya’s prenatal distress to me. It was a vile, desperate tactic, designed to destroy my reputation and, more importantly, hurt Maya.
“You lay one finger on Maya’s reputation, TJ, I swear to God—” I began, rising to my feet.
“Oh, I don’t need to lay a finger,” he cut in, his eyes gleaming with malice. “Just a few altered text messages. A couple of strategically placed anonymous tips to the right gossip blogs. Imagine what that would do for your campaign, Mr. Principled Candidate. You, abusing your pregnant wife.”
Maya, who had been silent, her face pale, suddenly spoke. Her voice was quiet, but it cut through TJ’s smug bluster like a knife.
“Every word, Terrance,” she said, her eyes fixed on his phone. “I recorded every word of your extortion attempt.”
TJ’s grin faltered. His eyes widened, a flicker of panic in them. He stared at her, then at the small, discreet voice recorder I now saw clutched in her hand, its tiny red light blinking steadily.
His face drained of color. He hadn’t realized she was recording him, just as he was recording us. The smugness vanished, replaced by pure, unadulterated fear.
“You think this is over?” he stammered, backing away slowly. “Mom won’t let you get away with this!”
He turned and practically ran out of the clinic, leaving a stunned silence in his wake. Maya looked up at me, a defiant glint in her eyes. She hadn’t just endured; she had fought back.
