Two hours before the arena doors opened, Maya stood in the backstage green room, the hum of distant crowd noise a faint tremor in the walls. Evelyn Navarro stood beside her, resolute.
The door burst open. Damon strode in, flanked by two burly men in uniform. Not arena security, but off-duty municipal officers he had privately hired.
“Maya Kincaid,” Damon announced, his voice booming. “You are hereby served with a cease-and-desist order. You will not perform tonight.”
One of the officers stepped forward, holding out a document.
Evelyn Navarro moved swiftly, interposing herself between Maya and the officer. “Officer, I advise you to read this first.”
She handed him the signed retraction from Dr. Aris Albright. The officer’s eyes widened as he scanned the page.
“Damon Kincaid,” Evelyn said, her voice cutting through the silence, “this is a confession. Dr. Albright admits you coerced him into drafting a fraudulent child welfare report.”
She turned to the officers. “Enforce Damon’s order, and you will be liable for aiding and abetting. Your badges, your careers, will be gone.”
The two officers exchanged a glance. Then, they stepped back, their faces tight. They would not assist Damon further.
Damon stood isolated in the corridor, the green room door now closing behind him. Crew members, drawn by the commotion, watched him with disgusted silence.
