Chapter 11: The Subpoena Siege

#content-1

I was back in Leo’s shop, the quiet hum of his machines a stark contrast to the storm brewing in my life. Julian’s confession letter and the operational ledger were tucked safely in a waterproof bag, now my most precious and dangerous possessions.

I was contemplating my next move, weighing the risks of approaching Moretti, when Leo’s landline rang. He answered it, then turned to me, his expression grave.

“Process server,” he said, handing me the phone. “For you.”

My heart sank. Julian. Again.

I took the phone. The server’s voice was monotone, reciting the boilerplate. “Mr. Marcus Bennett? I am serving you with an emergency motion for involuntary financial conservatorship, case number 23-CV-4902, filed by Julian Bennett, for a hearing Monday morning at 9:00 AM CST in Cook County Civil Court.”

Monday morning. That was in less than forty-eight hours.

“What exactly does this motion entail?” I asked, my voice tight.

“It effectively strips you of all remaining legal standing, sir,” the server explained. “It appoints Julian Bennett as temporary conservator over all your personal assets, including any and all holdings in Sarah Bennett’s estate and the Sarah Bennett Non-Profit Art Foundation.”

My vision swam. Not just my assets. Sarah’s foundation. The charity she had poured her heart into, the legacy she had built. Julian was moving to seize control of it, to absorb it into his network of illicit funds.

“He’s trying to get his hands on her charity?” I demanded, a surge of pure fury washing over me.

“The motion cites ‘financial mismanagement’ and ‘mental instability’ as justification, sir,” the server continued, impervious to my rising anger. “It requests immediate judicial intervention to protect the foundation’s assets from ‘further depletion by Mr. Marcus Bennett’.”

It was the final nail in the coffin. Julian wasn’t just attempting to ruin me; he was trying to erase Sarah’s memory, to co-opt her name for his own nefarious purposes. He was twisting everything good and pure into something rotten.

“If this motion passes,” I asked, “what happens to the foundation?”

“Julian Bennett will gain full control over its finances, its board, its operations. Within forty-eight hours.”

I hung up, the receiver clattering against the desk. He wasn’t just playing chess; he was playing scorched earth. He would leave nothing standing, nothing of my life or Sarah’s memory, if it meant securing his stolen fortune.

Leo, who had been listening intently, looked at me. “He’s closing all the exits, Marcus. Making sure you have nowhere left to run. And nowhere left to hide anything.”

He was right. This wasn’t just about my personal assets anymore. This was about Sarah’s legacy. Her charity. Julian knew that was a vulnerability, a point of leverage he could exploit to force my hand, or simply to take what he wanted without resistance.

He was daring me. Daring me to act, to make a move that would either save everything or destroy it all. The legal system was an impenetrable wall. The police were a death sentence.

But I had Julian’s ledger. His confession. The DNA proof. Evidence that would mean nothing in a court of law, but everything to a man like Victor Moretti.

The choice was clear. Surrender to Julian, let him seize Sarah’s foundation, and wait for Moretti’s enforcers. Or, take the ultimate risk.

I picked up the burner phone. There was only one number to call now. The man who operated outside the law, who dealt in blood and steel. The man who Julian had tried to make my executioner.

Victor Moretti. The subpoena siege had ended. The real war was about to begin.
