Eleanor plunged into the stacks of financial documents provided by Elias’s legal team during discovery. Each page was a blur of numbers, corporate names, and legalese. Her eyes ached, but she refused to give up. Somewhere in this mountain of paper, she knew, lay another piece of Elias’s deception.
She focused on the charity fund’s transactions, particularly those Elias had provided to “prove” the funds had gone to legitimate, albeit complex, partners. There was one bank record, showing a transfer to a company called “Global Ventures Holdings,” supposedly a legitimate development firm.
Eleanor cross-referenced it with Sarah’s encrypted documents, with the cryptic details of “Starlight Trust.” Something felt off. She meticulously compared the account numbers, digit by digit.
And then she saw it.
A single, almost imperceptible smudge on one digit of the receiving account number. A ‘6’ that, under intense scrutiny, looked like it had been subtly altered from a ‘9’. It was such a minute change, designed to escape all but the most obsessive eye.
She immediately brought it to Marcus, her tech-savvy friend. He took a high-resolution scan, then used specialized software to enhance and analyze the pixel data around the suspicious digit.
“You’re right,” he said, his face grim as the software highlighted the alteration. “It’s a digital manipulation. Very clean, very subtle, but it’s there. The original digit was definitely a nine.”
With the original account number recovered, Marcus cross-referenced it through various public and financial databases. The true account, the one with the ‘9’, belonged not to “Global Ventures Holdings,” but to a completely different entity: “Azure Sky Corporation,” a shell company registered in a remote Caribbean nation, completely unlinked to any legitimate development firm or Elias’s publicly known businesses.
It was another direct link, irrefutable proof of Elias’s intent to defraud, meticulously hidden. The doctored record was meant to send investigators on a wild goose chase, misdirecting them from the true, illicit offshore recipient of the charity funds. Eleanor felt a surge of cold fury. He was so careful, so calculating.
