The cabin door burst open just as Julian’s body slumped fully to the floor. Clara stood there, Marcus behind her, both framed against the swirling snow and the first pale light of dawn. Her eyes, still wide with unspeakable grief, landed first on Arthur’s lifeless body on the hearth.

Then they moved to Julian.

A choked, guttural sound tore from her throat, a sound of absolute anguish. She stumbled forward, ignoring Marcus’s outstretched hand, and fell to her knees beside Julian.

His eyes were open, unfocused, but when he heard her, they found hers. A faint smile touched his lips, a ghost of the man she knew.

Clara cradled his head, pressing her face against his icy cheek, feeling the warm, sticky wetness spreading from his chest. “Julian,” she sobbed, her voice a broken whisper. “My love. My Julian.”

He coughed, a terrible, wet sound. “Clara… our boy… I failed…”

“No,” she cried, shaking her head, tears streaming down her face. “You didn’t. You never did. You saved me. You tried to save him.”

He reached a trembling hand, trying to touch her face. His strength was fading, his breath shallow. “Forgive me…”

“There’s nothing to forgive,” she whispered, tightening her embrace, pressing her lips to his forehead. “I love you. Always.”

Julian’s gaze softened, a deep peace settling over his intense grey eyes. He drew one last, shuddering breath, a faint sigh, and then his body went still in her arms.

Clara screamed then, a raw, primeval sound that tore through the quiet cabin and was swallowed by the vast, indifferent wilderness. She held him, rocking him, as the light of the bitter dawn crept through the shattered door.

No police sirens sounded in the distance. No curious neighbors arrived. Only the whisper of the wind through the pines. A short while later, silent figures emerged from the tree line, men Marcus recognized as Arthur’s syndicate enforcers. They were not there for justice. They were there for cleanup. They moved with cold efficiency, collecting Arthur’s body, erasing all traces, leaving Clara alone in the wilderness with her dead husband.
