Chapter 12: The Fall of Penthouse 14A

#content-1

The smoke was so thick I could barely see my hand in front of my face. The shouts of federal agents echoed through the penthouse, their voices amplified by the destruction.

“Vault room secured!” someone yelled.

I heard the distinct metallic clang of the steel shutter being pried open. Brenda and Evelyn’s terrified gasps followed, then sharp commands.

“Hands where I can see them!”

“Don’t move! Federal agents!”

I knew what that meant. They were detaining Brenda and Evelyn. They had found them, trapped in the vault corridor.

My own chance was now or never. I ripped open the hidden rear service hatch. It revealed a narrow, vertical shaft—the pneumatic trash chute, modified as an emergency escape. It plunged straight down to the basement alley.

I squeezed through the opening, the rough metal scraping against my clothes. The smell of dust and garbage filled my nostrils.

“He’s in the vault! Move!” Kincaid’s voice, cold and authoritative, cut through the din. He was just outside the vault room.

I dropped into the chute, letting gravity do the work. The narrow tunnel rushed by in a blur.

Seconds later, I landed hard in the padded dumpster at the bottom, the stench of decaying food overwhelming. I scrambled out, my body aching.

I was free. Out of the penthouse, out of federal custody. But Brenda and Evelyn were captured, taken at gunpoint for my secrets. And my home, my carefully constructed safehouse, was gone forever.
