Agent Kincaid strode into the now-exposed vault room, his face grim, his tactical team already sweeping the perimeter. Brenda and Evelyn stood against a wall, federal agents training their weapons on them.
“Where is he?” Kincaid demanded, his eyes fixed on Brenda. His voice was a low snarl.
Brenda, pale and shaking, just stared at him. “He’s gone.”
Kincaid ignored her, his attention already on the inner vault safe. He knelt, his gloved hands expertly working the bypass on the heavy steel door. It clicked open with a soft hiss.
Inside, stacked neatly, were dozens of hard drives. This was it. The black-budget ledger. The evidence.
He pulled one out, his eyes scanning the label. “Delaney, you’re not getting away with this.”
But as his men plugged the drives into their mobile analysis units, their faces hardened.
“Sir,” one agent reported, his voice flat. “These are… junk. Placeholder files. Old movies. Nothing relevant.”
Kincaid snatched a drive, verifying it himself. Decoy hard drives. All of them.
He slammed the drive back onto the shelf. “He played us.” His gaze flickered to Brenda, then back to the empty vault. “But he made a mistake.”
He pulled out his comms unit. “I want an immediate dragnet. Focus on Leo Delaney. Boston. Campus dorm. He helped his father. Now he’s going to lead us to him.”
