Chapter 15: The Sunrise Over Topanga

Victoria’s triumphant, cackling laugh echoed through the pitch-black living room. The smell of burning paper filled the air.

“It’s gone!” she shrieked, her voice thick with venom. “All your lies, all your plans, turned to ash!”

But then, a new sound cut through the darkness. The familiar hum of the emergency generator, now steadier, clearer. The lights in the living room flickered back to life, bathing the stunned faces in a harsh, revealing glow.

And there, standing directly in front of Victoria, was Julian Drake.

He held something in his hand. Not a scorched piece of paper, but a pristine, watermarked document. The *real* trust ledger.

“You really think I’d let you burn the original, Victoria?” Julian’s voice was cold, his eyes glinting with a defiant light. He had snatched the true ledger from the folder in the split-second of darkness and thrown a decoy into the flames. “After everything I’ve seen? After all these children have suffered?”

Victoria’s face, moments ago triumphant, crumpled in horror. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Julian didn’t hesitate. He strode to the coffee table, where a high-definition studio camera, still hooked into the emergency satellite system, had been set up earlier by Gemma’s crew. He slammed the genuine watermarked ledger onto the desk, its details starkly visible.

Then, with a deliberate, resolute movement, he hit the manual override switch on the camera. A small red light flared, signifying a live broadcast.

“This is Julian Drake,” he said, his voice ringing with authority as he looked directly into the lens. “Head of PR for Finch Entertainment. And for six years, I’ve covered up a truth that can no longer remain hidden.”

On the studio monitors, now live, the watermarked ledger filled the screen, every detail of the stolen millions, every forged signature, brutally exposed.

Gemma Brooks, who had been huddled in a corner, watching Victoria’s meltdown, finally understood. Her face, a mask of shock and outrage, hardened into fierce determination. She had been used, lied to, and nearly implicated in a monstrous cover-up.

She spotted a high-powered studio spotlight near the fireplace, one that had been brought for her broadcast. With a furious grunt, she grabbed it.

The beam sliced through the room, finding its target. It hit Victoria Finch directly in the face, blinding her, exposing her ravaged expression to the world.

“This, ladies and gentlemen,” Gemma’s voice boomed, amplified by the camera’s microphone, “is Victoria Finch! Live! And these,” she continued, pointing to the ledger, “are the financial records detailing the theft of $4.8 million from the trust funds of Silas Montgomery’s seven children!”

She began to read aloud, her voice unwavering, every damning entry, every date, every specific amount stolen from the children’s inheritance, echoing through the room and out to millions of viewers.

“Four hundred thousand dollars, monthly, since 2018!” Gemma declared, the spotlight fixed on Victoria, who shielded her eyes, her screams of helpless fury swallowed by the roar of the storm and the irreversible live broadcast. “This money was embezzled to prop up a failing studio image, while these children were left to starve in the dark!”

The truth, undeniable and raw, was screaming across the airwaves.

If you want to be Silas’s wife, you take care of his mess, or you get back on the plane to Ohio.
