Chapter 13: Circular Horizons (Epilogue)

#content-1

The morning light was a soft, golden wash over the apartment balcony. Piedmont Park stretched out below, a tapestry of green and dew-kissed trees. The air was crisp, carrying the faint, distant sounds of the city waking up. Nia set down two plates of breakfast on the small wrought-iron table – fluffy scrambled eggs, crispy bacon.

“Perfect,” I said, reaching for my mug. She handed me a steaming cup of coffee, the dark liquid swirling gently. I took a sip, the warmth spreading through me, a quiet moment of peace settling over us.

I smiled at Nia, her face illuminated by the rising sun, and held her hand across the small table. The quiet rhythm of the morning, her unwavering presence, filled me with a profound gratitude. It was a new beginning, a quiet horizon after the storm.

Suddenly, the apartment intercom buzzed, a harsh, unexpected jolt. Its shrill tone cut through the peaceful morning air.

“Process server,” a voice announced, tinny and impersonal. “New civil summons for Marcus DeBerry.”

My hand, still holding Nia’s, stiffened. My gaze drifted to the coffee cup, the exact symbol of where my nightmare had begun four weeks prior. The corporate battle, the personal attacks, the relentless legal shadow – it wasn’t over. It was an endless, rolling cycle, Julian’s obsession finding new ways to manifest, a fresh out-of-state civil lawsuit, plunging us back into ongoing litigation.

But as I looked across the table into Nia’s calm, loving eyes, a different feeling settled in. This wasn’t the same. I wasn’t the same. I squeezed her hand, a silent promise.

Some battles don’t end with a clean victory; they end with you realizing that as long as her hand is in yours, you can stand through any storm.
