Chapter 18: Two Weeks Later

David Reed’s phone vibrated incessantly in his hand. He was pacing his private study, the room usually a sanctuary, now a cage. Marcus Jenkins’ news segment was hours away, a ticking time bomb counting down to the detonation of his entire life. The terror in his gut was a cold, hard knot.

He paused, staring at Sarah’s contact photo on his screen, a faded image from years ago. He had called her a dozen times, each message more desperate than the last. He tapped ‘call’ again. The phone rang three times before going to voicemail.

“Sarah, for God’s sake, pick up!” he shouted into the phone, his voice hoarse, raspy with desperation.

He paused, collecting himself, then softened his tone, forcing a tremor of false remorse.

“Please, Sarah. Don’t do this. Think about what this will do to Lily. To all of us. This is insane. You’re fabricating evidence. This is pure malice, a vendetta.”

His voice began to rise again, anger battling panic.

“You’re mentally unstable! You always were, prone to these vindictive fantasies. You’re going to ruin my life! Our life!”

He punched a wall, the dull thud echoing in the quiet room.

“You think this is justice? This is pure, unadulterated spite! Call him off, Sarah! I swear to God, if you don’t stop this journalist, I will make your life a living hell. I will ensure you have nothing left. You’ll regret this!”

He hung up, slamming the phone onto his desk. His hands were shaking, his carefully constructed composure completely shattered. He ran a hand over his face, sweat beading on his forehead. The gaslighting, once an effective tool, now felt like a desperate, pathetic plea. He was out of options.

My phone vibrated, lighting up the dim hospital room. It was David, again. I watched the screen, listening to the frantic voicemail he left. His voice was a rollercoaster of emotions: pleading, accusing, threatening.

“He sounds truly desperate,” Emily observed, her voice low. She had stayed with me, sensing my need for quiet companionship.

I pressed the delete button, silencing David’s frantic pleas and threats. “He’s losing control. He doesn’t know what else to do.”

“He just accused you of fabricating evidence again,” Emily said, her brow furrowed. “He’s still trying to make you doubt yourself, even now.”

“It’s just noise now,” I replied, my voice calm. “The truth is already out of my hands. Marcus has everything he needs.”

I looked at Emily, a sense of quiet finality settling over me. The hardest part was over. The years of planning, the careful observation, the patience – it had all led to this moment. David’s desperate, last-ditch attempt to gaslight me was a sign of his complete unraveling. His threats no longer held power; they were merely the thrashing of a cornered man.

The phone rang again. David. I let it go to voicemail, then silenced my phone entirely. The air in the room felt lighter, clearer. David could rage and threaten all he wanted, but his words were now impotent. The game was over, and he had lost. My focus was now on Lily, and on the quiet peace I had fought so hard to reclaim.
