Part 1

🤰**My ex-husband invited me to his wedding with his assistant—then panicked when I told him I’d just given birth.**
I just answered my phone, expecting a wrong number. Instead, it was my ex-husband, David Reed, inviting me to his wedding with his former assistant, Chloe Adams.
I told him I couldn’t make it; I’d just given birth to my baby girl a few hours ago.
The line went silent.
Then a frantic “Whose baby?” came through, followed by a sudden realization in his voice that made my blood run cold.

The phone call had been pure David Reed. All pomp and casual cruelty.
He had rambled on about the extravagant venue, the exclusive guest list, his “perfect new life” with Chloe Adams.
“It’s going to be the event of the season, Sarah. You really should come witness it.”
His voice was dripping with an arrogance I hadn’t missed one bit since our divorce. I imagined him calling from the wedding venue itself, the muffled chatter and distant string quartet in the background confirming it.
I shifted Baby Lily gently in my arms, a tiny yawn escaping her rosy lips. “I appreciate the thought, David,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “But I won’t be able to make it.”
He chuckled, a short, dismissive sound. “Oh, come on, don’t tell me you’re still pining. It’s been a year. Get over it.”
“It’s not that,” I replied, a small smile touching my lips as Lily’s fingers curled instinctively around mine. “I literally can’t. I just gave birth a few hours ago.”
The line went utterly silent. The distant music and chatter vanished as if he’d stepped into a soundproof room.
Then, a choked, frantic sound.
“Whose baby?”
His voice was rough, laced with disbelief. “What are you talking about, Sarah? That’s impossible! We haven’t seen each other in over a year!”
I heard the distinct sound of a door being flung open on his end, then a woman’s voice, annoyed. “David? What’s going on? The guests are starting to arrive.” It was Chloe.
“Impossible?” I echoed, letting a hint of ice enter my tone. “Perhaps you should re-read the divorce papers, David. Specifically, the part we *both* signed regarding future family planning. It wasn’t just about assets, was it?”
The silence on his end stretched, heavy and dreadful. I could hear his ragged breathing. A horrible, dawning realization was creeping into his voice. I could almost picture the blood draining from his face, the carefully constructed mask of smug confidence cracking.
“No,” he whispered, the word barely audible, full of genuine terror. “No, you wouldn’t have dared.”
I didn’t answer. I just listened as the chaos erupted on his end of the line. Chloe’s voice rose sharply.
“David, darling, what is it? The caterers are ready! What are you doing?”
I heard a crash, like the phone being dropped onto a hard floor, followed by the sound of rapidly retreating footsteps. The string quartet music from the venue swelled again, but it was quickly overshadowed by Chloe’s increasingly panicked shouts.
“David! Where are you going? Stop him! The wedding starts in five minutes!”
He abruptly abandons his waiting fiancée and rushes out, leaving guests stunned.

Part 2

A crash of the door announced David’s arrival in my hospital room.
He stood there, disheveled, his expensive tuxedo rumpled, his face blotchy with rage.
“Whose baby is that, Sarah?” he spat, pointing a trembling finger at Lily’s bassinet.
“What malicious game are you playing?”
I held Lily closer.
“It’s our daughter, David. And there’s no game, just the agreement we both signed.”
I met his furious gaze, a calm smile on my face.
“Perhaps you should re-read it more carefully this time.”
He scoffed, running a hand through his hair.
“Don’t try to entrap me with your delusions. I’m calling Peterson. He’ll straighten this out.”
David stormed out, convinced his lawyer would easily dismantle my claims.
Later, I imagined him in Mr. Peterson’s office, the papers spread out.
I pictured David’s smug, confident smirk as he explained my “erratic behavior.”
Mr. Peterson, after a brief review of the papers, turned to David with a grim, wordless expression that signaled a profound problem David didn’t anticipate.
