The Senate committee room remained a maelstrom of flashing cameras and shouting voices, even after the Chairman’s definitive suspension of the hearing. Victoria Danforth stood isolated at the witness podium, a statuesque figure amidst the swirling chaos, her expression a mask of chilling control.

Then, the doors at the back of the chamber swung open.

A team of federal agents, their dark suits and stern faces commanding immediate attention, strode purposefully into the room. Their leader, a woman with a no-nonsense demeanor, walked directly toward the witness table.

The noise in the room died down, replaced by a sudden, stunned silence. Every eye in the chamber was fixed on the unfolding drama.

The lead agent stopped in front of Victoria, holding out a document. “Senator Danforth, you are hereby served with a federal subpoena from the Department of Justice, Public Corruption Unit.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened. She didn’t flinch, but her eyes narrowed, two pinpricks of icy rage.

“This subpoena initiates a criminal public corruption inquiry into your primary campaign funds, Senator,” the agent continued, her voice clear and precise. “All accounts associated with the ‘Victoria Danforth for Illinois’ campaign committee are hereby frozen under federal order, effective immediately.”

The news landed like a bombshell. Frozen accounts. Criminal inquiry. Victoria’s power base, her financial lifeblood, was being cut off, live on national television.

Just as the agent finished speaking, a new, equally shocking scene unfolded nearby. Harrison Burke, Victoria’s chief political strategist, who had been sitting in the gallery, abruptly stood up. His face, usually so composed, was pale and clammy.

He walked quickly down the aisle, his path crossing directly in front of a live camera crew. He stopped, facing the lens, and spoke in a shaky, high-pitched voice.

“I can no longer be associated with these developments,” Burke stammered, his eyes darting wildly. “My resignation from Senator Danforth’s campaign is effective immediately.”

He didn’t wait for questions. He simply turned and fled the committee room, abandoning Victoria in her moment of crisis. The architect of her media smear against Julian had just performed the ultimate act of career self-preservation.

Cameras flashed furiously around Victoria. Her political strategist had just resigned on live television, her campaign funds were frozen, and her cabinet appointment was dead in the water. She was standing utterly alone, exposed and cornered, under the full, unblinking glare of the world. The only sound was the clicking of camera shutters, a relentless rhythm recording her spectacular fall.
