Chapter 16: Sunday at Golden Overlook

Two days later, the Harland Family Foundation annual memorial dinner was a somber affair. The blizzard had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cold Denver evening. The grand dining room of the historic hotel, usually filled with sparkling conversation, felt heavy with a strained silence. Toby’s death cast a long shadow.

Bianca sat at the head table with Chairman Marcus Lindqvist, a picture of composed elegance in a dark dress. Her expression was carefully calibrated – regretful, but also expectant. I knew she believed this was her final victory, the last nail in my coffin. My contract termination, she assumed, would be a mere formality.

I was there, a ghost at the feast, seated at a quiet side table with Cade. He looked hollow, his eyes distant, his grief a palpable shroud around him. He hadn’t spoken more than a few words since Toby’s death. The audit files, Toby’s last act, were now securely with Cade, but the weight of that truth felt unbearable.

The speeches were bland, perfunctory. Marcus Lindqvist cleared his throat, preparing to deliver the closing remarks. The air crackled with anticipation. I knew what was coming. My public dismissal.

Just as Lindqvist opened his mouth, the heavy oak doors at the back of the dining room swung open. All heads turned.

Derek Reynolds walked in, accompanied by two uniformed Denver police officers. He wasn’t dressed for a formal dinner; his jacket was rumpled, his tie slightly askew. But his eyes held a fierce, unwavering resolve.

A hush fell over the room. Bianca’s carefully constructed composure fractured. Her eyes widened, a flicker of raw fear crossing her face.

Derek walked purposefully towards the small stage where the sound engineer was packing up. Without a word, he handed a small audio recorder to the stunned technician.

“Play this,” he said, his voice clear and ringing through the silent room.

The engineer, looking utterly bewildered, plugged it into the sound system. A moment of static, then Bianca’s voice filled the room, amplified, unmistakable.

“He was always so weak,” Bianca’s voice sneered, the recording chillingly clear. “Always trying to protect his mother. The $180,000? So easy to pin on her. The fool actually thought he could hide my debts. And that suicide note? A stroke of genius. Everyone believes she drove him to it.”

A gasp rippled through the assembled board members and family. Faces turned towards Bianca, shock and outrage contorting their features. Marcus Lindqvist’s jaw dropped, his face ashen.

The recording continued, playing more damning admissions: Bianca gloating about framing me, detailing how she forged Thomas’s note, admitting to the offshore gambling that had driven Thomas to despair. The details were undeniable, horrific.

Bianca sprang from her seat, her face white with terror. “This is a fabrication!” she shrieked, her voice cracking. “A lie! He’s trying to ruin me!”

But the recording played on, her own words, her own malicious intent, echoing through the stunned silence. Her carefully crafted facade had shattered, revealing the monstrous truth beneath.

I took the quiet archivist position at Harland Capital in Denver hoping my past would never find me.
