Chapter 13: The Legal Aftershock

#content-1

A stunned silence filled the boardroom, broken only by Lily’s soft sniffles against my shoulder. The implication of Aunt Martha’s words slowly began to sink in for everyone present.

Robert Maxwell, Head of Operations, usually a stoic and pragmatic man, stepped forward, his face pale with a mixture of shock and dawning recognition.

“Aunt Martha’s claims…” he began, his voice raspy. “I… I can confirm them.”

All eyes turned to Rob. He seemed to gather himself, pulling a slim folder from his briefcase.

“Elara Reed,” he said, looking at me with a new, complex expression, “earlier inquired about ‘unforeseen claims’ related to old family documents. It prompted me to look into some long-dormant legal files in the company archives.”

He opened the folder. “An hour ago, I found this. A detailed codicil confirming the trust’s provision. It’s legitimate. And ironclad.”

The immediate financial implication for Brightwood Holdings and its ownership structure was clear: Lily, a three-year-old child, was now a significant shareholder. The multi-billion dollar merger, which had been Arthur’s life work, would need immediate and drastic restructuring. Cassandra’s power, her influence, her entire future, had just evaporated.

Cassandra collapsed into the nearest chair, her face drained of all color, her hands shaking uncontrollably. Her scheme, her ambition, her carefully constructed world, had not only imploded, but she herself had been the catalyst.
