Pandemonium erupted. I rushed past the stunned executives, scooping Lily into my arms, pressing her trembling body against mine. She whimpered, clinging to me.
Arthur, pale and visibly reeling from the paternity reveal, stared, utterly stunned, at Lily, then at me. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
“This is unacceptable!” Cassandra shrieked, pointing at me. “She brought her illegitimate child here to disrupt everything!”
But before the chaos could fully engulf the room, a clear, commanding voice cut through the noise. It was Aunt Martha Brightwood.
She stepped forward, her frail frame belying the unexpected force in her tone. “Silence!”
Every head turned. Aunt Martha, her eyes fixed on the antique mahogany table, walked slowly towards it. She placed a gnarled hand on one of the ornate carvings.
“These are not mere decoration,” she declared, her voice ringing with authority. “They are a legal mnemonic, a specific code, embedded in the founder’s original design for this table.”
She looked at the assembled board. “This table is the key to a hidden codicil in the original Brightwood Family Trust.”
Aunt Martha paused, letting the words sink in. “This clause states that any direct descendant of the founder, if formally ‘acknowledged’ within the presence of this table *on the family estate*, gains immediate, significant voting shares in Brightwood Holdings.”
She turned, her gaze settling on Cassandra, whose face was a mask of horror. “And Cassandra Albright, your public act of pushing Lily from this table, in front of the entire board, within these hallowed walls, constitutes that formal acknowledgement.”
The revelation hung in the air, thick with shock. A child, my child, Arthur’s child, now held the power to reshape the entire company.
