Chapter 18: Section Sixty

Evelyn Reed didn’t pause. She held up a document, its printed pages stark against the polished podium.

“Under federal statute, and by the authority of the Department of Defense,” she announced, her voice resonating through the hushed convention hall, “we are here today to address the egregious findings of a comprehensive audit of Voss Defense Logistics.”

She looked directly into the primary camera, her expression unwavering. Clara and Julian sat frozen, their faces pale and horrified, their eyes darting wildly between Reed and Arthur. Arthur, meanwhile, stood utterly still, his earlier bluster having evaporated into thin air.

Twist 14. Reed held up the 2008 corporate acquisition agreement. “We have obtained and verified the original acquisition contract for Voss Defense Logistics, executed fifteen years ago.” She then read directly from the highlighted section. “Quote: ‘The option to purchase David Kincaid’s remaining 35% equity shall expire exactly fifteen (15) years from the date of final signature, unless activated earlier by documented corporate fraud or material breach of ethical conduct by Arthur Voss.'”

A murmur rippled through the crowd. This meant Arthur’s claim to David’s shares had officially expired months ago. He had no right to them.

Reed continued, her voice gaining momentum. “Furthermore, the contract stipulates, quote: ‘Should said corporate fraud or material breach be documented prior to the expiration of the buy-back option, the entire outstanding equity (35%) shall automatically and immediately transfer to an independent public veterans’ trust, designated by the Department of Defense, with no compensation due to Arthur Voss or any affiliated entity.'”

She then held up the forged appraisal document. “We also have a signed confession from Garrett Finch, senior licensed appraiser and notary public, detailing how Arthur Voss paid him $120,000 in offshore accounts to forge Mr. David Kincaid’s signature on land transfer and equity valuation documents in October 2010. This was precisely when Mr. Kincaid was in a medically induced coma in an intensive care unit, rendering him legally and physically incapable of signing such documents.”

Twist 15. The corrupt appraisals performed by Garrett Finch were now public. This wasn’t just a corporate dispute; it was criminal. The hall erupted in a shocked wave of gasps and exclamations. Reporters began furiously typing on their laptops.

Reed let the uproar subside, then raised her voice again. “Therefore, under federal law, the corporate fraud, documented and confessed, triggers the automatic reversion clause.” She paused for dramatic effect, her gaze sweeping across the faces on the stage, including Arthur’s. “As of this moment, 100% of the corporate equity of Voss Defense Logistics is officially frozen and transferred into an irrevocable public trust, to be administered by the Department of Defense for the benefit of injured combat veterans.”

Twist 16. Arthur’s face was ashen, his jaw hanging slack. “This renders Arthur Voss’s attempted sale illegal and immediately strips him of all executive power within the company. All corporate assets are now under federal receivership.”

The crowd exploded. A cacophony of shouts, questions, and flashbulbs engulfed the stage. Arthur Voss, the titan of industry, stood utterly annihilated on live television, his empire crumbling around him.

And I, the “glorified band-aid dispenser,” had orchestrated it all, choosing to walk away with nothing, to ensure justice for David and for countless others.
