Chapter 18: One Year Later on Girard Avenue

The industrial warehouse on Industrial Lane was exactly as grim and unglamorous as I expected. It was a sprawling, concrete structure, devoid of any discernible signage, blending into the other functional buildings of South Philadelphia. The air inside smelled of stale coffee, machine grease, and a faint metallic tang.

Anthony, Moretti’s man, met me at a nondescript door. His eyes, cold and assessing, swept over me. He merely nodded towards the entrance of an inner office, a small, functional room with scarred wooden furniture.

Inside, Julian Brock sat across from Sal Moretti, a man whose presence filled the cramped space. Moretti was broad-shouldered, with a hawkish nose and eyes that missed nothing. He wore an expensive, but understated, suit. His expression was impassive, unreadable.

Leo Kincaid sat beside Julian, a pale, trembling shadow. He avoided my gaze, his hands clasped tightly in his lap. Julian, however, offered me a smirk, a flicker of arrogant confidence in his eyes. He thought he had won.

“Ms. Linwood,” Moretti said, his voice a low rumble. “Thank you for joining us. Mr. Brock has presented an issue regarding property and overdue capital.”

Julian immediately launched into his well-rehearsed narrative. He held up his fabricated balance sheets, presenting them with a flourish. “Mr. Moretti, this young woman, Ms. Maya Linwood, is illegally withholding syndicate assets. Her former boyfriend, Leo Kincaid, used the property at 1412 Girard Avenue as collateral for a $140,000 debt to the syndicate, a debt Ms. Linwood has refused to acknowledge.”

He pointed a finger at me, his voice rising in righteous indignation. “She believes she can simply claim sole ownership through a fraudulent inheritance agreement, effectively stealing syndicate funds that were invested through Mr. Kincaid. This house, sir, is rightfully collateral for your outstanding capital, and she is denying you access.”

Julian painted a picture of me as a stubborn, greedy orphan, deliberately obstructing a legitimate business transaction. He talked about my “disruptive business practices” and the “financial instability” I was causing in the neighborhood, all the lies he had seeded in the craft guild and lumberyard. He even had a fake deed of trust, supposedly signed by Leo, transferring the property to Brock Ventures LLC as a lien.

Moretti listened, his face betraying no emotion. His gaze occasionally shifted between Julian, Leo, and me. He let Julian speak for a long time, laying out his intricate web of lies, building his case, painting me as the antagonist.

I sat quietly, just as Sienna had instructed. My hands were clasped in my lap, mirroring Leo’s, but my grip was firm. I let my expression remain composed, betraying nothing. I was waiting. Waiting for the precise moment.

Moretti finally held up a hand, silencing Julian. “So, you claim Ms. Linwood is preventing the recovery of $140,000 in syndicate capital by refusing to relinquish this property?”

“Precisely, sir,” Julian affirmed, a triumphant glint in his eye. “It’s an egregious act of defiance, affecting your bottom line.”

The room was silent then, heavy with anticipation. Julian leaned back, confident. Leo looked like he might faint. Moretti simply watched me, his gaze unblinking.

And then, the door to the office opened. Sienna Albright walked in, her presence cutting through the tense air like a knife. She held a thick, worn envelope and a black ledger in her hands.

Julian’s face, a second ago filled with smug satisfaction, went ashen. His jaw dropped, his eyes wide with disbelief and dawning horror.
