Chapter 17: Morning in the Bakery

The night deepened, but the party at the Gable house showed no signs of winding down. I could still hear the distant thumping of music, a jarring counterpoint to the quiet intensity of my own preparations. I was exhausted, but the thought of the morning’s hearing kept me alert, my files stacked neatly for easy access.

Then, my phone buzzed. A notification from social media: “Chloe Gable is LIVE.”

A cold dread settled in my stomach. I clicked on the stream, a morbid curiosity overriding my exhaustion.

Chloe appeared on screen, her face flushed and shiny, her hair disheveled. She was clearly heavily intoxicated, swaying slightly in front of what looked like the ornate fireplace in the Gable living room. Behind her, blurry figures danced and laughed.

“Look at all these haters!” she slurred, holding up a glass of red wine. “Always trying to bring me down! Especially my little sister, Maya. Thinks she’s so clever, doesn’t she?”

She stumbled over her words, clearly enraged by something. “But they can’t touch me! They can’t touch us! My family is untouchable!”

My eyes widened as I saw a stack of official court notices in her free hand. They were sealed documents, formal and stark white.

“And you know what else?” Chloe continued, waving the papers haphazardly. “They sent me this garbage today! Another stupid letter from the stupid courts! Like I care!”

She squinted at the top document, struggling to focus. “It says… it says… ‘State of Vermont vs. Chloe Gable’… blah, blah, blah… ‘FELONY INDICTMENT’!” she bellowed, dissolving into a fit of giggles.

My blood ran cold. She was reading her own indictment papers. Live. To thousands of people.

“And they think they’re so smart!” Chloe roared, her voice escalating. “They think they caught me! Over some stupid… ‘obstruction of justice’ for a little fender bender! And ‘wire fraud’ for a tiny payout to that… that delivery guy!”

She waved the papers again. “Mark Hastings! Yeah, that guy! We paid him off! And who cares if Maya’s name was on some stupid form? It was for the family! Fallow said it was fine!”

She was confessing. Admitting everything. On live video. The hit-and-run, the payoff, the forged signatures – all blurted out in a drunken, self-destructive rant. The camera wobbled as she leaned in close, her eyes wild.

“They think they can prove it?” she slurred, a manic grin stretching across her face. “I’ve been dodging those cops for months! They’re never gonna catch me!”

Just as she finished the sentence, a loud pounding erupted from the background of her stream. The music abruptly cut out.

“What was that?” Chloe mumbled, looking confused.

Then, a stern, authoritative voice echoed through the stream, cutting through Chloe’s drunken haze. “State Police! Chloe Gable, you are under arrest!”

The phone dropped with a crash. The screen went black, then flickered back on, showing the ceiling of the Gable living room. The sounds of shouting, shuffling, and the distinct click of handcuffs filled the silence.

Chloe’s livestream had become her live indictment, her public confession, and her arrest, all in one catastrophic, drunken spectacle. The climax had arrived, broadcast for the entire world to witness.
