Chapter 19: Sunset over Cliff Walk

The air in the motel room felt heavy, charged with an unspoken tension. My phone buzzed with a message from Evan. A short, urgent text: “Source says Arthur is preparing to flee. Private air transport. Switzerland. Tonight. Police might be delayed.”

My stomach dropped. Switzerland. A country notorious for its banking secrecy and its welcoming arms to the ultra-wealthy seeking to evade justice. He wouldn’t just be gone; he’d be untouchable, forever. The legal process would become a hopeless, international tangle, dragging on for years, perhaps never reaching a resolution. All of this, for nothing.

“He can’t escape,” I murmured, staring at the message. “Not now. Not after everything.”

Evan immediately called me. “Clara, you heard me. The local authorities are still dealing with jurisdictional paperwork for airport intervention. He’s connected. He could be airborne before they get a judge to sign off on a stop order for a private flight.”

“I have to go,” I said, already reaching for my coat.

“Go where?” Evan’s voice was sharp with alarm. “To the Danforth residence? Clara, that’s insane. He’s a dangerous man. A cornered rat.”

“He’s running,” I insisted, my resolve hardening. “He thinks he can just disappear. I can’t let him. Not when justice is so close.”

Evan swore under his breath. “What do you think you’re going to do? Stand at the gate and tell him off? He’ll have security. He’s armed, for all we know!”

“I have to face him,” I said, my voice quiet but firm. “He ruined my life. He tried to destroy my name, my family. I have to look him in the eye before he disappears forever. I have to make sure he knows he failed.”

It wasn’t just about justice anymore. It was personal. It was about reclaiming my dignity, my agency, from the man who had tried to strip me of everything. I needed to ensure he understood, truly understood, that his reign was over, not just that he got caught by some anonymous police officer.

Evan argued, pleaded, but my mind was made up. He knew that look in my eyes. The one born of desperation and an unyielding will.

“Fine,” he finally relented, his voice tight with frustration. “But I’m calling Det. Harris. He needs to know what you’re doing. And I’m coming to Beacon Hill. I’ll wait outside. If I don’t see you come out within fifteen minutes of the police arriving, I’m going in after you myself.”

I nodded, grateful for his reluctant support. It was a fool’s errand, perhaps. A dangerous, impulsive act. But the thought of Arthur Danforth slipping away, smug and untouched, was unbearable. I needed to be there. To witness his downfall, to make sure he saw me, the woman he had tried to break.

The final confrontation. On my own terms.

My prospective father-in-law shoved me full force onto the glass patio table when my fiancé refused to break our engagement for a high-society merger.
